A recent debate in a thread about Kai's unfortunate acting sparked this question; do k-pop fans prefer their favorite idols to have natural talent or rather them be hard working?

I'll use Suho and Baekhyun from EXO as an example. Everyone knows Suho trained for 7+ years under SM before debuting and Baekhyun trained only a few months.

Despite Suho's decades of hard work, Baekhyun surpasses him in singing, dancing and popularity, while Suho is still mistaken for being a worse vocalist than Lay and is arguably only above Chanyeol in dancing.

Not that Baekhyun isn't hard working, but in this case natural talent prevailed.

Which do you think is more important in a good idol?

well natural talent will always surpasses the one who doesn't have it,but that shouldn't be excuse to stop trying, your hard work will pay off and people are gonna see your improvement and you will be put in a good light for always trying hard even tho sometimes it's hard..im not really good at dancing and my friend has talent for that but i always try harder and harder every time, there is no need to give up on anything

natural talent duh.

that's like asking someone what do they prefer, getting good grades without trying or study hard but still unable to achieve results.

The context of "hard work" here is rather different though, the opposite of "unable to achieve results",

both

TBH this

one can have natural talent but if you don't work hard to develop it it's basically useless, so both

In Baekhyun and Suho's case at debut, Baekhyun had a lot of talent but very little training and came out on top. Suho worked hard for years but had little talent and suffered for it. It's not an equal relationship.

Natural talent which is not maintained with hard work will end up being wasted.

There are many cases of very talented people ended up being jobless (in real life cases) cos of the lack of hardwork (or let's say they are lazy in developing themselves) while those who work really hard ended up being succesful despite of having not so bright (mediocre) natural talent.

Natural talent is not something we can ask or choose to have, while hard work is.

you need both. baekhyun (and other idols like him) is successful because he is naturally talented AND hardworking. There's no point having natural talents if you don't nurture them with hardwork and dedication.

Every individual have their own specialty, or talents. Same goes for beauty, what the point if you have a talent but you don't polish it. The truth is you also need LUCK, how many talented people out there whose work really hard to realize their dream but luck doesn't on their side.

That still doesn't imply that his hard work achieved nothing. Results are varied. Just because someone is compared to the best singer/dancer in the world and pales in comparison, that doesn't mean they achieved nothing.

But if you wanna put it that way then:

is arguably only above Chanyeol in dancing.

While both trained hard for years.

In the end, I value hard work more.

Im still not sure what kpop fans called 'talent' tbh. Bcus its not like there are idols who became idols despite of having 0 potential. All idols have potential, but the degree is different for each of them.

There are some idols who actually has more potential in modelling or acting. They became idol for many reasons. It could be that the agency wanted them to be the visual of the group and stan attractor. Maybe bcus theyre also good at dancing. Or maybe being in a group could make it easier for his/her acting/modelling career in the future. Etc etc.
