How to get into jpop?

I usually listen to K-pop but I would like to branch out, hence why I'm here. There's a ton of groups within the group directory for jpop but I don't know where to start. Uh could someone recommend me some groups/albums I should check out as an intro to the would of jpop?

the groups mostly suck, no offense to JPoppers

Just listen to the divas, for a start

Utada, Namie, Ayumi, Kuu, etc

Unless you are already familiar with their music

I used to listen to Ayumi Hamasaki a lot and like ky her but I've grown it of that. And the only Utada I've listened to was the one with the album called Exodus. I think there's another one Utada tho

listen to Perfume!

FLOWER, E-GIRLS, Kalafina, FictionJunction, Yuya Matsushita, Namie Amuro, Utada Hikaru, Kana Nishino

Some of the above are soloists

Also, BoA's Japanese language discography (she's Kpop, but she was mostly known as a Jpop artist in her early prime due to her mostly promoting in Japan)

Jpopsuki is a mine: There are many downloads of Japanese music acts, even older or more unknown ones. Also YouTube for acts that reach more for a Western audience (You've already seen FAKY, Perfume, etc.). LiveJournal communities are for downloads and contributions for Johnny's (Arashi, SMAP...).

There are users here that will be glad to help you! Check the J-music suggestion threads of this forum, the threads dedicated to a newly released song also.

Choose what you like best. Japanese music has many many genres. From pop to something more avantgarde. Enjoy it. Feel the music. Watch out their performances or say "OMG this guy is so beautiful" if you like, too. Ignore the pricks and get rid of the elitism. Take advantage of the information that is more useful for you.

Good luck!!

Coming from Kpop to Jpop, I think E-girls is a really good start.

Yeah.... E-Girls, Sandaime, Generations.... appeal to a Kpop demographic. I've seen so many self-proclaimed Kpop fans singing the wonders of those groups

The downside about Youtube though is that certain acts under certain companies are blocked to US citizens. For example, I used to be able to watch E-Girls (and their groups Flower, Dream, and Happiness)' videos on Youtube but ever since the whole Youtube Red thing or whatever I have to go elsewhere to watch their videos/check out new music of theirs since their videos are now blocked in my country.

Echoing stuff like E-girls if you're into K-pop, or FAKY.

For slightly more typical Japanese idols, I personally really like C-ute, but this is where you'll start to see the difference between J-pop and K-pop because K-pop is more "polished" overall and J-pop values a rough-around-the-edges quality to their idol groups that allows you to see the members grow and mature over time. this is the nice way of putting it lol

Also taking this moment to promote my flop fave:

J-pop is a little difficult to get into because the industry is definitely not as open and accessible as K-pop; you're going to run into a lot of short versions of MVs, blocked content and so on. But it's improving, so I hope you find something you like.

*Checks her non-German European privilege*

Agh, that's a bummer...... YouTube Red sucks altogether  :>_>:
