it's actually the family name with one syllable and the given name with two

and there are exceptions of course

No it's common among many Asian name. The given name is 2 syllable but can be seen as 1 middle name + 1 first name

Thanks for letting me know I changed the original post :)

Many years ago in Asian history, Korean family names consists of 3 to for syllable.  Only aristocrats and royalties can only use the family name. So you can guess that, commoner only have a given name but not a family name.

It was until some king had a leniency to give a name for a family that supports them.  It was written in some historical records that I forgot.
So those Kings bestowed a one syllable family name to their supporters as a sign of servant-ship. For example, Lee, Bae, Seol, Cheol, Jeon, Son, Son, Kim.
Most kings limit the name that they give in a small group. You can expect a king having only 6 (or so) families or  family names under his wing.

Imagine an empire containing only having a 6 (or so) family names. If thats the case there will be a large number of Kims,Parks, etc etc. in that empire.

This custom had been carried on since it was effective in showing the name of servant-ship. Then when those royalties and kings died, no one had to carry the multi-syllable family name. So those family under the kingship tend to fought for the position. Thus carrying the position and the name given to them, a one syllable name.

The importance of name in those time was big. You can offend someone and scare them using only the name. Like you can kill someone and no one will offend you because you are under the some family (Park family for example) and say that you are under the wing of the king.
