"Real American Beauty" : African American Culture vs White/Caucasian American Culture?

watch these videos back to back

I recently stumbled upon these two videos again and it just really made me think. there are so many things going on in America. so many sub-cultures, so many different types of people living so many types of lives, experiencing so many different things in the same country. these videos give peaks into two different worlds, worlds some of us have probably have been exposed to or live in. it's interesting to see them juxtaposed like this. just wanted to share this tbh. feel free to discuss.

What a great share, these videos are so interesting to watch, and I love that there's no commentary to it. Just interviews, and shots of people, it's great, it doesn't get more raw than that.
And damn, is prom culture a crazy thing in the US, I get surprised every time it's being talked about. It looks so extra from here, but at the same time, it's also a rite of adulthood too. There's no such thing in Europe, and I clearly don't miss it.

I'll make sure to check the other video, I'm always eager to watch these types of documentaries, and always learn so much.

As a non-American I have to ask but is it normal for the (what looked like to me) the whole town to join in on the prom...parade? Everyone is watching these kids head off to prom, there's an entire street reserved just for them to walk in with their dates and show off their outfits ...that seems a bit...excessive but idk is that the norm there?

Aside from that, the stark contrast between the two videos was amazing. Even more so when you rewatch them and realize how proud and confident the females in the first video are in comparison to how insecure the ones in the second are. I wish they continued to the series, would love to see a desi or mixed girl version.

I live in America, in maryland, and this is NOT normal everywhere. hell, i didn't even go to my prom because i thought it was fucking stupid and i went to an all girls school so i didn't really have a date or anything. this is probably more the norm for upperclass areas and/or tight knit communities, but not everywhere.

that would make more sense but wow that seems horrifying for someone who didn't get a date.

This happens all over the world. I remember that two moms fought because one of them wanted to make our prom in a castle and the other one said no because the prize was too high for everybody..

Is incredible that something like that can end up on a fight and people getting hurt..

I think this prom hysteria might be a thing in the midwest/south, because i lived in various places but never experienced this. to those not overly familiar with the US - it's a huge country and the parts of it are very different. some regions have more of a pageant culture as well, and never forget the different ethnic/cultural groups as well.

america is complicated lol

but yea, great videos!! i'm american and didn't even know about some of these

There are so many things going on racially and socioeconomically and geographically. Like I'm black, but I don't identify with the first video due to me being in part of a higher socioeconomic level. But then I think that if they were in The Northeast, I could identify with it more. I actually identify more with the second video, since I was raised around and still deal with people like that. I have no connection to the third video at all.
