Tonghua (writer of BuBuJingXin) in her recent interview said Once Promised will surpass BuBuJingXin. Thats some expectation there...

A Brief Introduction to Once Promised:

I actually tried to start Once Promised a few months ago, but was unable to get past the heavy introduction and first chapter. I tried again last week and after finally figuring out the political situation in the book, it became unbelievably addicting. Once Promised is Tong Hua’s first attempt at the fantasy genre but still has her key tear-jerking style. I’m not even done with the book and I already want to lock her away for shattering my poor heart so many times and to make sure she will never torture another soul with her vivid storytelling.

The reason I love this story so much is because the non-romantic relationships are so gripping - Shao Hao and Qing Yang’s friendship, Qing Yang and Chang Yi’s brotherly affection for A'Heng, the sworn brother- and sister-hood between Xi Ling Lei, Yan Di and Wang Mu, Shun Di’s affection for A'Heng, and A'Heng’s childhood with Yi Peng.

I’m not going to summarize this book in detail because Chancy and Raini have already promised to translate it after they finish their current project (and because it would be way to emotionally exhausting to remember each and every scene), but I will explain the setting a little. Once Promised takes place in a mythical/semi-historical era, call the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors period. The world is split into three kingdoms ruled by three immortals - Shen Nong’s Yan Di, Xuan Yuan’s Huang Di, and Gao Xin’s Shun Di. Drawing these three kingdoms together is a young immortal girl named Xi Ling Heng, also known as Xuan Yuan Ba, the Tenth and only Princess of Xuan Yuan’s Huang Di. She is betrothed to Gao Xin’s eldest prince, Shao Hao, but on her various journeys away from home, she meets and slowly falls in love with Chi You, a wild beast-turned-man and Yan Di’s only disciple. Xuan Yuan’s Huang Di single-handedly created his own empire while Shen Nong and Gao Xin were both descended from old royalty. However, Huang Di’s ultimate goal is world domination and he uses the people around him to achieve his own ends, causing his wives and children to scheme against each other, and pulling all three kingdoms into war.

This particular scene involves Xi Ling Heng, who has turned from an innocent and happy girl, into a cold and calculating woman. She will do anything to protect her family, even if she has to kill the brother that she grew up with. I bawled like a baby during this scene. I hated Yi Peng with all my guts and then Tong Hua pulls this, making me completely unable to hate him. I think what draws me into Tong Hua’s stories is how complex and fleshed out each of her characters is. No one is simply good or evil, they are all various shades of grey, each with a hidden past.

Actually, now thinking back, I must clarify that the characters in her historical/fantasy novels have good character development. In her modern novel Secrets Hidden by Time, Su Man started out as a desperate and annoying woman but ended up being a completely insufferable idiot. So in that case, it was major character regression.

I see this will be a glossy idol drama.

Huang Xiao Ming is a huge star but he really should bow out from doing idol dramas... :(

I wish they cast Wallace Chung instead. He's hotter. Or Wallace Huo.

Do you consider Bu bu jing xin an idol drama? If not, then Once Promised shouldn't be, either. Once Promised is one of the most acclaimed books from Tong Hua (even moreso than BBJX) and deals with heavier subjects. It's actually a very meaty role for Huang Xiaoming, I'm not sure he can convey the complexity of Chi You. The story is anything but glossy.

I'm weird but I do consider BBJX an idol drama. Like Wallace Huo's version of Swordsman was an idol drama too imho.

For me non idol dramas would be like Nirvana of Fire or Three Kingdoms. It's easy to spot an idol drama with the cast alone.

What exactly makes BBJX an idol drama? Because of its time travel element? I can understand if you say so about Yang Mi's Gong which is the superficial copy version of BBJX. Wallace Huo's Swordsman is obviously an idol drama because it is produced by Yu Zheng and the bastardized interpretation of the source material is oriented to fulfill teen fantasy, not because of its cast, so it's not really a good comparison to make. I guess you instantly categorize the drama as an idol drama because of Victoria casting. We need to see how they adapt the book first before brushing it off as another glossy idol drama.

I don't see how BBJX is called an idol drama and before Nirvana in Fire, Hu Ge is one of the biggest idol actors there is with his fantasy dramas (chinese paladin 1,3, Legend of the condor heroes, Xuanyuan Sword) so you're not making much sense here.

That was the gimmick they pulled off in Nirvana in Fire and Battle of Changsha though. It was done on purpose - to cast that one idol actor against the ensemble. Both were done by the same company too.
