Why do people get so offended by fanfiction?

I can understand when it's overly sexual/creepy and sexualizes minors in groups.

But when it's just decent fanfic, what's the issue with it?

I've been reading some confessions off of UKO (Unpopular Kpop Opinions) and some of them are just ridiculous.

I get not everyone likes fanfic, and I have no problem with that, it's just the ones who primarily dislike it for no reason.

Sure, I can also understand the point(s) behind writing about an idol's life that you know nothing about, but the point of it is that it's fiction.

I don't even read/write that much fanfic tbh, I just feel like it's ridiculous for wanting to take away someone's creative freedom.

As a ficwriter I avoid writing some things. Fics that shows someone being raped but ending up falling in love with the rapist afterwards, violent and opressing relationships, Im always sadly surprised at how many fics with these plots people write like something okay and acceptable.

some people have weird feels about writing about real people, which I get. it might be uncomfortable for idols to read about themselves in compromising situations. IDK. It's an ethical gray area. If idols could come out and say, 'it makes me feel violated when people write these things about me, I really wish they wouldn't' or alternatively, 'I find it funny when people write these kinds of stories' the action to be taken would be more clear.

some people think all fanfiction is inherently trash, and those people are wrong.

then there are the kinds of concerns jaehyun. and the OP mentioned and those are valid as well. Where lies the line between harmless fantasy and perpetuating harmful tropes? it's hard to say. It's good to critique fanfiction like that, as it is to critique media with possible harmful tropes as well.

This is a comment I wrote on seoulbeats months back. I've edited out the last paragraph because it's necessary. It's still long. I apologize.

"I'm always a little surprised when I see people in the kpop fandom being so nonchalant about fan fiction. Not because I didn't know it existed, but because of the content and nature of it. I've been reading (and writing, to a lesser degree) fan fiction since about 2008, but none of it has ever been kpop related, or anything written about real people for that matter. The idea of fan fiction being about real people isn't a foreign concept to me, but rather it's something that I've always been told by other writers is taboo.

Writing fan fiction about books and tv shows is one thing to me; characterization of fictional characters is always up to constant debate. No two people have the exact same idea of a character's personality. It's also fun to explore ideas of what could have happened in a plot if something hadn't gone wrong/right. For works of fiction anything is possible.

I have never been able to see how you can do the same to real people. Regardless of any onstage personas they create, it's still going to be an aspect of their real world personalities. I can't comprehend how someone can try to twist or bastardize someone's actual personality like that. Also, while shipping is extremely common in fan fiction, shipping two real world people together is a little messy. Liking the idea of two people dating isn't so bad; you can think their personalities match or that visually they would be a striking couple. But I think some fan fiction writers go too far with the smut. I always think of what these people think when they hear (or even, in some cases read) about these pieces. It's mind boggling to me. I wouldn't want to read that sort of thing about myself."

pretty much all this !

but also

The vast majority is terribly (TERRIBLY) written and/or falls into those ethical grey areas that make me side-eye the author and all their fans.

I mean you'll find 10 horribly written fic before you find a single good fic and while this doesn't mean you should hate fanfiction and the idea of it, there should be some accountability held for the fact that some of the tropes and things written in ff are terrible. Themes such as r*pe, incest, unhygenic/safe sex are rampant in ff and maybe I'd be okay with it if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of these people writing it are very, very young but also easily swayed in their thoughts. The amount of oc fics (especially in the exo and bts fandom) where the girl is r*ped, cheated on, falls in love with a murdered/gang leader whatever is huge and sadly seems to easily influence a lot of young people that those types of relationships are okay.

Like people above said, it's a very gray area especially since it involves people irl

That's another point I forgot to put, when it involves themes such as rape/incest/ that's where I can also understand why some people don't like it.
