This is my 2nd external hd i've bought in a week first was a toshiba 1tb hd that wouldn't disconnect from my laptop safely, i chalked it up to you get what you pay for(57.99) and returned it. But i bought a wd passport 1tb external hd(79.99) and it won't disconnect safely either from laptop.People said just shut down your laptop and when it turns off yank the usb out,and i've been doing that but it is rather inconvenient.Has anybody had this problem and found a solution?

you got Windows? I have it for a Mac and it works fine... I drag it to the trashcan.. (I guess in your case it would be the recycling bin) and it'll eject itself.

yes i'm running windows 7...hmm i'll try that dragging to trash can

edit* it didn't work, pop up window "generic volume cannot be removed because another program may be using it,close all programs and try again"

but everything is closed though :(

My drive does the same sometimes. If it isn't actively transfering data I just pull it out, no problems. Show the little bastard who's the boss! :happy:

hahaha, but i heard if you don't safely remove it, you run the possibility of files being lost or corrupted.

do you have any backup programs or antivirus?

they could be scanning

never trust those wd passports

I tried using mine and it had to be "reformatted" and all my files had to be deleted ;~;

i have the free avg anti virus, and the free super anti spyware programs. about the wd i heard they were one of the best though next to seagate when it comes to portable hd's because they originally specialize in hd's?

i have that problem with my usb stick sometimes. It's annoying. I have to eject it instead of safely removing it. A warning does come up saying it could be corrupted but nothing has ever gone wrong. It's only a $10 16gb usb stick though, so i'm not that worried if it messes up.

I never had that problem for my external hdd though.

If you unplug it while it transfers data that might happen, just be careful and you should be fine.

so it's fine as long as the files are done being moved over to just pull it out? how long have you been doing that? never lost anything?

I have done it for over two years with this drive, never had any problem. Just make sure the drive is idle (stable light, not flashing) when you unplug it.
