  1. 1. Should public colleges be free ?

Recommended Posts

Do you look up to countries where public colleges are free? Do you think college tuitions discourage people from going to college ? Do you think that if we give out free college education, people won't appreciate it and be lazy ? Do you think people who have to take a part time job or get indebted take their studies more seriously ? Should public colleges just get cheaper instead of free ? A compromise ?
Do you think it's not possible ? Is there no such word as free, since someone has to pay money for the equipment, etc for the field of study ? Would tax payers have to pay alot more ? Or should we just spend less on for example military and more on that and keep the taxes that way ? Or should colleges look for other ways to generate money ?
Is education a right, everyone should have ? Will the society benefit from more college students ?
Or are there already enough alternatives like stipendiums, etc ?
Do you regret college because you're indebted now ?
Would it bother you as a person from a better background, that people with a worse background have access to the same benefits like you ? Do you think it's better, when people with worse backgrounds get indebted and are too busy to think about politics or other kind of things because they will be busy with paying back their debts or spending their money on the next iphone or something else instead of trying to change the country ? Do you think your country or your life would be better this way ?
This and many other things.

If you're worried about people who shouldn't be in college enrolling (which happens already in the US, the most expensive place in the world to go to college: see legacies, sports stars, etc.), just have a secondary education that weeds out people and puts them on a track for useful vocational training instead. And institute outreach and increased funding for elementary schools in poor areas so advance in education is really merit-based, and it doesn't just end up being poor people in vocational training.

Yes, we pay taxes to state and city universities, those should fully finance public education. And taxes can indeed be increased if necessary; there are certainly enough private companies and individuals not paying their fair share to cover it. My state just passed a proposition that increased the homestead exemption and cut the school district property taxes by millions of dollars, which will inevitably lead to budget shortfalls. But state lawmakers don't care because they all send their kids to private christian academies and think that should be ideal. So yeah, people should absolutely be paying more in taxes for education.

¿Should public colleges be free? The answer is absolutely. That's one of the things I like about my country. Once someone graduates from a public college, they won't have to spend the next 10 years slaving away to pay off the debt, unlike in other countries

Should it? Yes. I'm of the opinion that educated individuals are a worthy investment of tax money. That said, I would prefer a system where students from high income families should pay some tuition while lower class students have all the necessary financial aid. A system like Brazil's where public universities are top class and free sounds great, but in the end it's mostly upper class students who can afford extra tutoring whom benefit and not the students who need free tuition like the system was meant to be.

We have public colleges in England that are free up to age 19 I think.. after that it's like £200 for a course.

Universities though charge £9000 per year. Totally not worth it imo.. the debt afterwards is too big.  :._.:

I think education should be free to anyone that wants it though tbh.

Yes, for undergraduates. For graduate schools in public colleges and private colleges in general, yeah, charge tuition fees if they want, but undergraduate should be free IMO. Other countries provide free undergraduate tuition, why can't the US?

I am studying in a public college with no tuition fee. And I think that depends whether the government can provide quality education despite with no tuition fee. In my case, luckily my course(Physiotherapy) in our school has good rep.

Just a bit cheaper would do so that the students won't ended up having debt till the day they actually die.

Since if your government is broke like mine.. Such magic won't happen.. Try to find a scholarship instead.
