MILE HIGH skyscraper set to become the worlds tallest building - twice the size of Burj Khalifa

A mile high skyscraper in Tokyo looks set to become the world's tallest building.

If it gets the nod, the immense tower would dwarf the Burj Khalifa in Dubai - currently the highest structure on the planet.

The new building, part of the Next Tokyo project, would be 5,577ft tall - more than double the Burj Khalifa's 2,717ft.

It would be built in Tokyo Bay, south of the main city, as part of an environmentally friendly development designed to combat climate change .

The project features a chain of man made hexagonal islands to protect the city from rising water levels.

If successful, they would form a water barrier to prevent flooding - as well as homes for half a million people.

The islands would be connected via Hyperloop - a high-speed tube-based transit system.

If it gets the green light the massive skyscraper, which is also hexagonal-shaped for wind resistance, would be due for completion in 2045.

Its current working title is the Sky Mile Tower.

According to Architectural Digest the tower could hold 55,000 people.

Its facade would collect, filter and store water from the atmosphere - meaning the upper floors would not need a water pump.

It kind of looks similar to Burj Khalifa in a sense that it also resembles a bamboo-like exterior design. Maybe just from the angle of that specific pic. It looks beautiful but I don't quite get the idea of the islands as explained...
