A 6.4 magnitude struck southern Taiwan in the early hours of Saturday morning causing at least two buildings to collapse.

Rescuers are working in the city of Tainan and it is unclear whether there are any casualties.

The city government is reported to have set up an emergency team. Tainan is home to nearly two million people.

The quake was shallow, so its effects would have been amplified, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

One of the buildings that collapsed was a residential complex, while those inside were sleeping, Taiwan's Liberty Times reported.

There are also reports of power outages.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is often rattled by earthquakes.
A 7.6 magnitude quake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (KABC) -- A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Saturday, causing at least two buildings to collapse.

The Taiwanese news website ET Today reported that two buildings toppled in the southern city of Tainan and that some water and gas utility pipes had ruptured. Sirens were wailing as city authorities responded to the quake, the news website said.

The temblor struck about 4 a.m. local time, or 2000 Friday GMT. It was located some 22 miles (36 kilometers) southeast of Yujing, and struck about six miles (10 kilometers) underground, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was felt as a lengthy, rolling shake in the capital, Taipei, on the other side of the island. But Taipei was quiet, with no sense of emergency or obvious damage just before dawn.

i don't if it's because i live in a country that earthquakes are so common and it's not important unless is like +7.5 that i can't really imagine how is for other countries to survive a 6-ish one..

But i hope everything is okay

countries that are used to earthquakes tend to be better prepared for earthquakes.  countries that don't have earthquakes often are usually not prepared when one hits

I'm so glad that all my relatives are safe and sound but the onsite news coverage is still devastating with so many still MIA under the rubble. Last we look at the news, the anchor says that Japan will be sending help I think and Japanese reporters are covering the news of the earthquake live for Japan on site too.

  • 2 weeks later...

The quake made me scream, and sent my family running out of their beds.

Since Taiwan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, normally, I'm used to small shakes. The building rocks to and fro a little.

But this one, our whole apartment was swinging really scarily(swaying like a rough ocean), and I screamed to wake up my mom because I was scared and I knew this was a bigger one than usual. Luckily, Taipei was alright. Poor Tainan. Rest in Peace to the survivors and condolences to their families.
