[iNTERVIEW] Hyolyn’s STARCAST interview w/ Brave Brothers & Kim Do Hoon

Kim Do Hoon x Brave Brothers ’ view on Hyolyn ? ….â€She’s like a fox , a bear , and ~ †Music Talk

On December 5th ,

Hyolyn , Kim Do Hoon and Brave Brothers gathered at LP music café ‘Café de Musica’ located in Hyochang-dong. The first one to arrive was Hyorin , who showed up with her own unique loud laugh.

" After the recording for the album was done , it is my first time meeting these two composers (BB-OWL/KDH-Lonely). I did not get the chance to give them my solo album because i wanted to gve them the album after nicely signing it . These two really made a lot of effort."

Soon , Kim Do Hoon & Brave Brothers showed up . It was the first time ever these two met. However the awkward mood did not last for a long time. After they started telling stories about their works on Hyolyn’s album , they found points they had in common and soon talked comfortably . Hyolyn was sitting between those two and the mood was happy and harmonious.

Now , it is the music talk of HyolynxKim Do HoonxBrave Brothers that STARCAST have prepared.

 

â–¶ Q. Hyolyn : Until now, I was Hyolyn from SISTAR. However, I made debut as the solo Hyorin, not SISTAR Hyorin. How did you feel about it?

 

A. Brave Brothers : It was not much different. You are the center of SISTAR when it comes to singing. I already knew you for three years, so I already knew that you are doing well. But I was surprised a little bit more when recording the songs for the solo album. SISTAR separates the song into different parts for each member. However, for solo song, one person has to sing the entire song, so I thought it was going to be hard. But, your breathing was very good. I really thought you know the basics of singing.

 

A. Kim Do Hoon : For me, I am different from the Brave Brothers. It is my first time ever working with you. I was thinking that the mood will be a lot different, different from when you were in SISTAR. It is also true that I was worried whether you will be able to pull off a style of song that was not shown when you were in a group. But you were really good at quickly reacting and adjusting and you also have a will. When looking at your ability to quickly react, you are like a fox but when looking at how much will you have, you are like a bear. You really are a professional singer.

 

â–¶ Q Kim Do Hoon : In contrast, I am curious about the thought and feelings you had when working with me for the first time. Also, your feelings when you were recording with the Brave Brothers and whether there were differences in our styles.

 

A. Hyolyn : I used to have phobia against recording studios. When singing a song when I was a trainee, I did not even know what doubling was and did not know in what way to sing the song. It was tough and I was criticized a lot back then. Afterwards, I was scared of the recording studios. I guess it is a trauma. However, you made the mood very relaxing. We ate meals and had conversations while we were recording. However, Dongchul (Brave Brothers) is very serious. When recording , he is someone who give me a lot of advice. We did not get to see each other for a while. We were giving excuse such as being busy so we did not get to keep in contact with each other. But there were times when we had deep conversations so even when we meet only once in a while, he felt like my real brother. Especially when singing, he is someone who gives detailed advice. In that aspect, he is trustworthy.

 

▶ Q. Brave Brothers : Thank you for thinking of me as if I am your real brother. I was curious of what you think of your title song. This time, you have two title songs, the song ‘One Way Love’ that I wrote and “Lonely†that composer Kim Do Hoon wrote. Please tell us why you chose these two songs as title songs.

 

A. Hyolyn : ‘One Way Love’ is a song that gives off energy, just like SISTAR did. However, the general atmosphere of a song is a little bit different. There is a minor style melody and a tango beat. I had to express sad emotions but it was a little bit difficult. The lyrics “You are the only one that I think of†and “why you only think about yourself †is a direct speech but the main character described in the song is a weak woman. Therefore, I tried my best to sing the song pretending that as if I was talking. ‘Lonely’ is a meaningful song as it is a new challenge for me. The genre of the song is British retro pop and is a very lyrical song. Until now, I have not shown this kind of style of music. A lot of people think that I will be shouting out in a high tone when singing. The reason I picked this song is because I wanted to let people know that ‘even when Hyolyn sing songs that are easy-going, it is not that bad.’

 

▶ Q. Hyolyn: I like both of the songs ‘One Way Love’ and ‘Lonely’. I am not saying this because you guys are sitting next to me. But, did you guys have a hard time writing the song?

 

A. Brave Brothers : I am not someone who is easily pressured . I think in an easy way that ‘If the song does not go well with the singer, than it is not going to work out kind of a thing.’ However, because it was Hyolyn’s solo, the story was a lot different. It did not take long to write the song but because of the pressure, I made about 8~9 revisions. I also continuously revised the lyrics of the intro part. But, the truth is, I chose the song that was made at the very beginning! Haha.

 

A. Kim Do Hoon : It is different from my views this time also. I did not have any pressure. It does not mean that Hyolyn’s album was not a burden. However, she was not the one that I usually worked with so I had thoughts that ‘with brand new attitude, let’s have fun’. The song ‘Lonely’ was composed in only one day. I think back then, the song matched well with my mood. The songs that are composed after thinking hard are not good songs. Instead, I spent time for the detailed post revisions to the song.

 

â–¶ Q. Kim Do Hoon: Hyolyn, after finishing making the album, did you have any regrets or areas you wanted to improve? In my opinion, I think that you might have wanted to take a step-by-step process for your album but you were so busy with other schedules.

 

A. Hyolyn : It is a question I wanted to be asked and you give me that question~. Actually, the amount of time I spent for my solo activities was long but the actual time that I put in was not very long. It is my first solo album and at the same time, the regular album so I wanted to add to the album songs with various genres. I listened to all the listed songs and thought to myself, ‘I should have added a happy and lively song but I did not and could not prepare for the song’ If I get a second chance, I want to make it much more perfect. Actually, to Kim Do Hoon and Brave Brothers, there were times when I wanted to say ‘Let’s do it this way and let’s do it that way.’ However, I know my singing is not yet good enough so I just held back my thoughts and tried to do the role that I can do for now so I did not speak out what was on my mind. Next time, I would like to make a time for us to talk more about what is in our minds. Maybe, we can talk about the things that are deep in our minds while drinking a beer (?). Who knows? There might be more shocking stories.

 

â–¶ Q. The Brave Brothers : Of course we are going to work together again next time. I think regardless of who the composer is, Hyorin will be still a singer whom they want to work with. Other than that, do you have anything else to say to us ?

 

A. Hyolyn : It is not even four years since I got my job and started my social life. I am not so sure of what to do and how to treat people when I am working. Of course, I am someone with a bright personality so I really enjoy my job while I am doing it. But of course, the reason I do it is not because of my effort to show my good sides in front of these two composers and I do not think that I should do my work this way to gain something and so on. That is never true. Actually, I met Do Hoon and Dong Chul for business purposes, However, I hope that our relations become more of personal relationships first rather than business relationships. I am going to sing for all my life. These two composers will also continue to write songs. The reason we met was for business purposes but I hope that we keep in contact and see each other for a long time, no matter whether it is a friend relationship or close older brother relationship. My story that is heartwarming but somewhat embarrassing at the same time. Hahaha, I am getting shy.

 

â–¶ Q. Hyolyn : I really wanted to ask this. Lastly, do you guys have any advice to give me? If you do, what would be the one?

 

A. Kim Do Hoon : I am not sure about anything else but I hope you think more about caring for your vocal chords. Hyolyn , you are a singer with good singing abilities and other people also think that you are a good singer. But sometimes, I see you talking very loud and that could a very bad habit for someone who sings. If you only be aware about that, I think you will be the singer who will be able to sing your whole life.

 

A. Brave Brothers : I think so too. Of course, you are still a good singer but since you have a lot of planned schedules and you are tired, you look like you need to care more for the health your vocal chords. It was ok for you to record a song for the long time and your voice was still fine but nowadays, even when recording only for a short time, your voice cracks. You are a singer so I do not need to give you advice such as ‘Be pretty’, right? You are still attractive. In the views of the composer, I hope you can sing with the best condition by caring more for your vocal chords.
