People born with albinism — a rare congenital condition that leads to a lack of pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes — can face a life frought with complications. Risks of blindness and skin cancer are high; children with albinism are often bullied or teased over their looks.

But in places like Tanzania, the challenges are unimaginable: discrimination, segregation, and even death. Local superstitions and traditions provoke attacks on people with albinism, whose limbs are used in witchcraft practices.

The public health and safety crisis for people with albinism in Tanzania has worsened recent years, officials say.At least eight attacks were reported there between August 2014 and March 2015, according to the United Nations, with victims including a 1-year-old who was brutally killed and a 6-year-old whose hand was chopped off with a machete.

“These attacks are often stunningly vicious, with children, in particular, being targeted,†Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, the then-United Nations high commissioner for human rights, said last year.

I feel so bad for them. I read something similar to this some years ago.

This place´s population is mainly composed by black people, right? It´s difficult to live normally without facing discrimation in places where the population is mostly white, I wonder how it still where most of it is black.

I have a friend, who's a few years older than me, that's albino and from Tanzania. She had to be sent to the states when she was in her teens because her family feared for her safety. When she first arrived she never would say exactly why she had to leave, but then the family she was staying with just told me that a lot of people mistrust albinos and there's a lot of superstition surrounding them. Obviously as I got older I found out more about the whole situation. It breaks my heart, because she can't go back to visit her family and they're not well off enough to visit her.

I really hope those who can't get away from the situation find someone to get protection.
