K. Michelle: "If Adele Were Black, No One Would Care About Her."

R&B singer K. Michelle is adamant that if the Adeles and Sam Smiths of the world were Black, they would not have the amount of commercial success that they do.

During a recent Q&A session with fans, K. didn't hold back when asked about the state of rhythm and blues. "They allow white people to sing our music... blue eyed soul is some bullshit. Yeah, I said it," she fired off in response.

K went on single out Adele's "Hello" while making the claim that if a black artist put out something similar, it would flop. "Hello, that's some bullshit, sorry. It's a great song, a great artist, but if a black girl was to sing that very song, it would not get played on the radio."

K went on to suggest that the black community is partly responsible for its artists not finding commercial success. "We sit around and call our very own artists flops, but we'll run and go buy some blue eyed soul... They don't have to destroy us because we destroy each other."

Do you agree with K? If Jazmine Sullivan put out "Hello" would t be as big as a hit as Adele's version, or is the British songstress only popular because she's white?

???

there are so many more well known black artists out there being played on the radio then any other minority

like... im so done with these hypothetical "IF ADELE WASNT WHITE!!" scenarios people keep dreaming up

that's just so disrespectful to the artist that you say that they only succeeded because theyre white.

Honestly she ain't lying. I don't get people trying to prented that the music world is about talent. Like yeah Adele is amazing but you're really delusional if you think that the colour of her whiteness didn't have an impact on her success. Especially making the kind of music she is had she been black she would have been stuck in the "urban" category.

I'm not saying that they're ONLY successful because they are white, but that their whiteness allowed them more freedom and more opportunities than would be given to black artists with a similar sound. I can't with people using Rihanna to deflect. Its like saying that because there is a black US president racism is no longer an issue. Or because a country has a female PM its no longer sexist. There are always exceptions to the rule.

LOL hell no. Ask anyone on this thread if they know who Jazmine Sullivan is. Half these users don't even know Kendrick Lamar and he's everywhere. But I wouldn't say it's just because Adele is white (though it does have something to do with it). I think it's because that British influence is strong and people are still attracted to it when it comes to the entertainment industry. That plus her being a great singer PLUS being gone for so long built hype for her...had she been steadily working since 21, her peak would have probably still been Rolling in the Deep.

I think she's forgetting that Adele is kind of going against the current. Nowadays, all people do is wear a skimpy leotard and sing about whatever and bam, success. Couple that with the fact that people just love her voice and it's no wonder why she's successful. Obviously there are other factors contributing to this; yes race sometimes contributes. Like some black country singers aren't as popular as their white counter parts, some black blues singers aren't as popular, etc. I guess it depends on a lot of things.

About Jazmine tho, she constantly releases amazing songs yet she's not as famous as she should be. Justice for her tbh

Actually i disagree with her. Adele would've been popular black or white, she make it seem like Aretha Franklin doesn't exist.

"We sit around and call our very own artists flops, but we'll run and go buy some blue eyed soul... They don't have to destroy us because we destroy each other."

Uhhhhhh no, i don't see black people running around buying Adele or Sam Smith..etc not sure who's she's talking about

I know a ton of black people who bought both. Myself included.

Its true. Adele is so easily marketable because she's a relatable average woman with incredible talent. Make her skin black, make her pretty, or make her lose weight and she turns into one of the millions of soul singers out there. If you listen to R&B, you would see there are tons of Adeles out there singing music just like her.

She wouldn't be as famous as she is today, that's just fact.

Really? Myself, and the other people i know haven't.

Do you only buy adele music and not support other black artists, because if you do- it still invalidates her claim. I don't think the community are choosing white artists in r&b/soul over black artists in the same genre like the way she's making it seem, white rb/soul artists tend to have to earn the respect imo

I agree with her but Imma need my black sis to stop rehashing this stuff because it aint going to make your albums sell more. Instead of focusing on the racist industry, focus on your music and keep doing you. I´m not denying anything, its true. But I feel like this has been said and done for a while now and it has become an excuse whenenver a black artist is not doing well. Do I need to talk about the black singers who changed their sound from RnB to Edm Euro pop music and miserably flopped? Usher and Ne-Yo I´m not talking about you.

eh adele is a ugly white woman tho so ethnic females will like her more compare to someone like taylor swift with above average looks and being a white girl ethnic females won't like that as much

I love Adele but I can totally see where she's coming from and I agree with it. Beyonce and Rihanna are only two examples in a sea of popular white girls making music.

And they are light skinned too. You would not find a dark skinned girl with the same amount of mainstream success nowadays. They just not gonna let it happen. My only wish is for black artists to focus on their music and stepping up their game so that they would get noticed. Kendrick Lamar has been dropping gems after gems and has hit it big so nothing is impossible.
