BEIJING, China â€“ Choking smog all but shut down one of northeastern China's largest cities on Monday, forcing schools to suspended classes, snarling traffic and closing the airport, in the country's first major air pollution crisis of the winter.

An index measuring PM2.5, or particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5), reached a reading of 1,000 in some parts of Harbin, the gritty capital of northeastern Heilongjiang province and home to some 11 million people.

A level above 300 is considered hazardous, while the World Health Organization recommends a daily level of no more than 20.

“You can’t see your own fingers in front of you,†Harbin’s official news site noted.

The smog not only forced all primary and middle schools to suspend classes, but shut the airport and some public bus routes, the official Xinhua news agency reported, blaming the emergency on the first day of the heating being turned on in the city for winter. Visibility was reportedly reduced to 10 meters.

The smog is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

What is with China nowadays?

First the killer bee infestation now this...

Is Mother Nature trying to reduce their population?

Blaming "Mother Nature" for pollution of this level is either very stupid or very ignorant of the world's current state

THIS is the country that is supposed to replace the US as the world's superpower nation  :omg:

yikes i guess this is the consequence of what quick and cheap industrialization can do to a place, but its no wonder global warming is quickly happening if pollution is THAT bad

No, more like "you reap what you sow".

And if you "sow" strip mining, non-existent environmental regulations, a never-ending lust for more finite resources, and Walmart's cheap prices, then yeah, of course you have to pay at some point.

Yeah, right on point. That's exactly why they're screwed. They should've seen this coming 30 years ago. What worse is that they think this only affects them but it doesn't. It affects all their neighbours and encourages the same irresponsible BS in other places too.
