These are the most dangerous cities in the world - where a lethal mixture of gang wars, drugs and corruption flares into violence which inflicts misery on millions of residents.

The list assesses the murder rates of cities across the globe, excluding active war zones.

Latin America is home to 41 of the 50 cities, with Brazil alone accounting for 21 of the deadly locations. The US has four cities in the list - St Louis, Baltimore, Detroit and New Orleans.

Venezuela's capital city Caracas is named the most dangerous city, with a murder rate of one homicide for every 834 people living there in 2015.

Damn, only 7 cities that are not Central/South America, 4 in the US and 3 in South Africa... That's quite shocking, I thought they'd be more evenly spread across the world :S

Well it's excluding war zones so maybe that's why.

I live 2h from Fortaleza/Brazil and yes, its kinda dangerous but Im sure there are cities way worse. Believe me, its not that terrible. All my family lives there and nothing has happened to them in 20 years. Natal too, its 7h from here and I dont find it so terrible.

 

I never went to Curitiba but my friends from there consider their own city as safe, so... ?????

 

Having high numbers of death doesnt mean that the city is one of the most dangerous imo.

Its not. All those Brazilian cities are capitals and the ones in the South (including Curitiba) tend to be the safest ones.
