'I never wanted to be in the band': Zayn Malik admits he wanted to leave One Direction after a year... in first on-camera interview since split

He left his fans bereft after walking away from One Direction in March last year, but Zayn Malik has admitted he 'never wanted to be in the band.'

The 23-year-old hitmaker candidly spoke in his first on-camera interview since leaving the group, in a chat with Zane Lowe for Apple Music's Beats 1Radio. During the chat, the now solo singer said he knew it wasn't right for him after just 'one year.'

He told the esteemed DJ: 'I just gave it a go because it was there at the time. I think I kinda always wanted to go. From the first year, I never really wanted to be there in the band.

'When I realised the direction that we were going in, mind the pun, with the music, I instantly realised it wasn't for me. How do you write a song from five people's perspective?'

The chat, which is set to air on Thursday, laid bare Zayn's feelings as his group - where he insists he battled with the form of music.

He adds: 'I think the boys knew that in terms of the music, that wasn't my cup of tea. When I was leaving the band, they didn't want me to leave. But I'd already made up my mind at that point.' Zayn speaks out ahead of the release of his first solo single, Pillowtalk - which is being released around the same time as One Direction embark on their indefinite hiatus.

well i get it because he auditioned as a solo artist and had no intentions of being in a boyband but jfc without those four other boys he wouldn't be shit he needs to stop being a pressed dick and shading them all the time it's annoying and sad

like he has a choice, the interviewers probably dont shut the fuck up about it, it's a field day for them! If he says no more questions about 1d then there is no more questions for him. I dont blame him, you gotta do what u gotta do. Plus this gets ppl pumped for his music. Anyway lets not pretend ANY of them wanted to be in the group, i thought it was obvious Zayn never wanted to be in the group lol I can't wait until Harry and Liam go solo too!!! Even though Harry's would be some indie mess i still can't wait :DDD I need a Zayn and Liam duet!!!

For someone who left the group, he sure talks a lot about 1d...

the interviewers always ask him about them, why would they not? it was a big deal when he left and they wanna get the scoop. i'm sure he's bored of having to say the same things about them over and over again

Meanwhile, KARA members said they thank their fellow members and that being members of KARA was a wonderful experience they would never forget

KARA>1D

lol watch the whole video next time

Ya'll be tryin too much because in the video (which you should watch first) he comes off pretty harmless and respectful (mentioned the boys in a good light) but true to his slight lack of eloquency.

Anyways, they all did it for the money, it doesn't help that his fam was also poor and he did it on his mom's push + they all auditioned as solo artists.

Well.... I wouldn't bite the hand that fed me but that's just me. It's great to be honest.... but, I don't know to what extent. Like I know the thing wasn't to be in the group but the group and X-Factor are why you have the name, the brand and the opportunities now. You might have left but staying is why you have the chance now and why you can make music people are dying to hear. Not being in the group would have been the worst mistake for all of them, but now look. I mean IDK... I don't feel he should be shamed for what he said but I think the way his words are being revised and how he phrased it came off a bit wrong or odd, and he will have these questions until his music speaks for him.

lmao that was obvious enough, he auditioned as a solo act so of course he wouldn't want to be in a group much less a group who sings bubble gum pop (and now....indie pop or whatever its called)

I'm glad he's finally being truthful but I hope he can back everything up with a good release, would be hella embarrassing if his music ended up being bad after all the hype

Kinda like how the boys talked about Zayn whenever they were asked too??? Like I don't get what people expect Zayn to do. He's gonna answer the questions he's asked.

Anyways, Zayn never said anything bad about the boys as individuals. He said he hated the music. That's it. And I don't defend him calling it "generic as f---" and "not real music" because that was gross and I adore this ""fake"" music.

HOWEVER, he never insulted the boys themselves. In one interview, he said "I'm grateful for everything we've done, but that's not where I stand as an artist anymore". He's also said something like "I feel no beef/we're not in a competition with each other".

Heck, in this interview alone, he said one of his favorite memories was when they first got together and sang songs by the camp fire.

Just because I hate a class I'm in doesn't mean I hate my friends that are in that class, or hold any bad feelings towards them if we drifted apart after graduation. You know what I mean???
