hess 3,578
She's a Taiwanese celebrity who co-hosted one of the most popular and long-standing Mandarin talk shows. Oh and her co-host is also openly gay. When will Korea. Although half of her commentary wouldn't be able to be broadcasted in Korea. Actually, a good amount of what happened on that show would probably have been banned from tv in Korea, lol. But seriously, the thread with the NB post on the lack of successful female Korean MCs who are attractive and funny without having to degrade themselves has a point. Xiao S is 37, married for 11 years, has 3 kids, and has been able to maintain her popularity through it all.

coward 1,968
I'd rather not. It's not like none exist. It's just that as shows have gone off air the new ones haven't made room for women. As was pointed out in yesterday's thread, Kim Sook said as much recently on IC and Lee Gookju also brought it up recently on Healing Camp. It doesn't matter who the woman is if they aren't willing to allow her in.
愛る 627
Why is everyone so obsessed and insecure that they have to have an ~equal~ amount of women to men on television? If a woman has talent, then by all means, let her do her MCing, but there's absolutely no reason to have women MCing just because they're women. That woman's just crude. It doesn't matter who the woman is if they aren't willing to allow her in. I know it's really more of a problem with the industry and the sexism that exists in the culture. I don't actually think one person will be able to all of a sudden turn things around. Point still stands that though that for the most part Korea has a weird media representation that women can only be funny if they are "unattractive" gagwomen who make jokes about their own looks. Why is everyone so obsessed and insecure that they have to have an ~equal~ amount of women to men on television? If a woman has talent, then by all means, let her do her MCing, but there's absolutely no reason to have women MCing just because they're women. That woman's just crude. Jesus, where did you get obsessed and insecure from? I'm not here to squabble about wanting equal air time for both genders down to the second. Quite literally I made this to talk about a celebrity I like and it overlapped with a topic that I found interesting. I'm not saying boring and un-entertaining women should start MCing just to fill some sort of female quota. But if people get the job based on talent, then why is there such a disproportionate ratio of men to women. It's not as if men have some inherent superiority in skill for MCing in their DNA. That woman has a strong 19 years and counting career plus something like 40 million fans who would beg to differ. You're entitled to your opinion but she doesn't need your acknowledgement to validate her success.

If we're going to complain about something useless like men dominating a certain field, let's do the same for women too. It doesn't matter how long someone has been doing something or how many fans they have. Margaret Cho is a comedian and has a lot of fans and has been doing it for a while, and she's still disgusting and crude.

They shouldn't be discriminated against having certain jobs just because of their gender just as much as women shouldn't. Did you know that gender equality in the workplace only started becoming an issue because men weren't able to become flight attendants? First you think that complaining about gender inequality is petty. Well, men were the first to gain traction on the issue. Then you argue that people should be just as concerned about how it affects men just as much as women. And again, the issue only first gained traction because men weren't getting equal opportunities. You're free to have your opinions about female celebrities. My point is that it does nothing to take away the success they've achieved from everyone else who thinks they've earned it.
