Article: Women are disappearing from TV

Source: Lady Kyunghyang via Naver

1. [+2,898, -173] Gagwomen like Jang Doyeon, Park Narae, and Lee Guk Joo are funny but they're unfortunately only ever brought on as guests

2. [+1,736, -136] Please create more new shows that can have female MCs~

3. [+1,124, -161] I think that gagwomen being less willing to use their wits or do body gags has a lot to do with it too

4. [+639, -16] It is getting pretty bad considering Song Ji Hyo is the only fixed female cast member out of all the Sunday varieties

5. [+720, -81] I don't get the argument that casts are male dominated because the viewers are mostly women and women prefer male casts... MCs like Jang Dong Min and Kim Gura are not liked by women, mostly men ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

6. [+240, -7] I think shows like 'Superman' and 'Oh My Baby' need to have men show the "real sides" of parenting... none of the stuff like laundry, making food, or cleaning is ever showed. The men are always off taking their kids to parks and having guests over. Parenting is not all about fun.

7. [+191, -21] Because women get hate for every little thing they do ã…‹ Imagine if a female MC had MC'd the way Jun Hyun Moo does, she would've been taken off every show already

8. [+153, -9] I don't think they've disappeared considering I've never even seen female MCs in main positions in the first place

9. [+165, -14] Because the biggest reason is that once viewers see a female MC that they don't see fits their standards of what society thinks a woman should be, she's immediately taken down. There are so many more things expected of women than men.

10. [+192, -33] Women on TV are expected to either be super pretty or be super talented (in variety, acting, or singing). They're judged to the extreme and are held to stricter standards. Our society is male dominated so people expect to see men in positions of power so when they see a woman in a main position, it looks out of place and unnatural so people start applying stricter standards to her to justify why she's allowed to be there. Women constantly have to prove that they deserve their positions.

11. [+114, -17] It's why I watch more foreign dramas instead of Korean varieties. I'm so sick of male dominated variety shows. I watch 'Running Man' for Song Ji Hyo and 'Infinity Challenge' once in a while but the roles given to women in varieties and movies are so pathetic. Why don't we ever have super strong female antagonists in movies? Women are only ever used as accessories or a pretty face, it's so frustrating.

12. [+110, -16] Because people still think that women "have to be a certain way" and anyone who doesn't live up to that is out

13. [+69, -3] Sayuri also said that she was cut from a show for rejecting sexual favors... Sayuri was really popular back then too but I don't see her lately other than on 'Real Men'.

14. [+67, -7] Please give us more female varieties...

15. [+40, -4] Come to think of it, the only female stars I remember seeing on varieties were either idols or fitness trainers... no wonder people think women on varieties are boring. I've been watching actual gagwomen lately and they're so funny.

tbh i don't miss women mcs because they were treated like shit anyway.

their only purpose seemed to be showing how much prettier female guests were and so male cast could call somebody fat and ugly a milion times.

i'd love all female cast i honestly believe it could work. i'd be a whole different dynamic and i think women would like to watch this instead of kim gura and jang dong min being gross

Comedian Park Narae needs to have her own show. Every guesting she does she makes me cry in laughter. Just looking at her face is enjoyable LOL

The thing I never understand about this is that its been shown that women are the main demographic of most of the entertainment industry so if they do indeed want more females all they have to do is lobby for it.   The PDs have to listen to the viewers since that's their money so they would have to listen their has been female dominated variety shows in the past so its not as if the concept is foreign.

Females have it easier for music though

I guess it evens out

I feel it's bit of a stretch to say women have it easier in the music industry, they really do not have it "easier". Sure, there are many female groups, but it's not like they are all super popular. Truthfully there are as many popular male groups as female groups, with male groups almost being able to reach success or at least a strongerfoot hold faster than female groups. In many respects female groups have it much harder as they always have to appeal to the public. In my opinion, a female group/soloist always has to appear to public, she has to be popular with the public whereas male groups/soloist truly only have to be popular with women which is much easier.

Both are disadvantaged in some regards, neither have it easier.  Most Boy idols  have no public popularity so their scandals are rarely a big deal because no one really cares but they constantly have to keep their fangirls happy and never step out of line because once they lose their fanbase they lose everything while a lot of female idols dont have the comfort of a huge fanbase but have large scale popularity with the public which results in more individualistic opportunities and earnings.

Sometimes I wonder about that though. Even the female gagwomen can be over the top.and..."gross"

Back when Shinhwa Broadcast was still on,  there was an episode where a group of female variety personalities dubbed the "Infinity Girls" (Hwangbo, Kim Shinyoung, Ahn Youngmi and some others...who I think had either their own show before or had segments on a show to themselves)  "kidnapped" Andy...and it was...as overbearing as anything the men have done on varieties tbh lol! All I'm saying is they can be funny, but they can also be just as overbearing, especially if they feel like they need to be as funny as the men.

I miss Jung juri

THIIIIIS. She was over the top at times, but she also had a thing about her where she wasn't afraid to just do her and it was hilarious to see the male idols either love her or fear her.

Also Jo Jungrin~

there are only ever 2 reactions to female on these shows: men scream, clap and call them goddess (any mistake she makes later will be scrutinized to death because she doesn't fit the "goddess" mold) or she is funny because she's fat and ugly

IKR! But Then there is Jihyo~

Also back in the day you had Hwangbo running things as the "healthy beauty" lol (but even then they'd use to tease her about being tomboy-like)

There is classic Korean varieties like Invincible Youth and Heroes that prove this wrong. When KBS did the female only Human Condition it slayed the mens version viewer wise.

But they then freaked out and recast the male cast a bunch of times instead of giving the ladies a chance.

there used to be more. I actually really liked the mom show from a couple of years ago with Lee Yeonja and Park Misun and Kyuhyun. It was all about ahjummas being funny and the funny tensions that can happen between moms and 30 yo daughters

That show was fun, and KBS has episodes up on YouTube still.  Misun is love though.  I'm still ticked off about Happy Together.  There's not a lot of people (let alone women) who can shut Park Myungsoo down.

The thing is, if they were successfully lobbied for more women it would be someone like Jimin from Gag Concert who would get the nod, not Gukjoo (who is #2 to YJS for me, I seriously adore her).  Jimin is ok, but she's not that interesting.  she is thin and pretty.

Random Opinions On This Topic:

  • I really really really wish that they "other" fake marriage show was subbed.  I find Kim Sook to be one of the funniest people on kvariety and I have heard soooo many good things about her and her fake husband's relationship.  right now, the only place I can see her every week is on star king and it's not one of my favorite shows.
  • I also think that kvariety has changed.  you used to have a lot of shows with regular panelist and guests like strong heart, star golden bell and xmen.  they would have turnover as time went on, but there just aren't that many with that format today.  most are about action happening outside of a studio or are extremely specific and exclusive.
  • it is kinda interesting that with how popular cooking/chef shows became last year, you don't see women on those shows.  There's Big Mama, but I haven't really heard of anyone else.  yet, you never see men cooking in "normal" kvariety shows if a woman is around...
