i wasn't shocked at all about trash not being her brother....i didn't even think he was her brother in the first place, I just assumed that something happened to his parents or something like that and he lives with them i mean kinda like the first season. everyone was shocked but i was like....we weren't supposed to know?  :unimpressed:

yeah. i went down tumblr and everyone was like "HUGE PLOT TWIST" and the whole time i had been thinking "so wait, is this guy really her brother? plot twist that he's not a love interest!" some people on tumblr were like "i hope she gets with Trash because she doesn't have any chemistry with the other guys!" ... but like ... she barely even has SCENES with the other guys. the writers gave them like one line of interaction each. when they were trying to tease the viewers with the hospital scene, i was wracking my brains not with "who could it be!?!?" but "... wait, am i supposed to be trying to guess who this is? did i miss an episode or something where na-jeong actually talks to the other guys and establishes a potential relationship?"

but yeah, kinda annoyed by that because they have almost the exact relationship shiwon and yunjae had from reply 1997 (though it's a little different because she is actually aware of her feelings and Trash is much sweeter to her than Brick Yunjae). it also has the same "GUESS MY HUSBAND" thing. and the same parents. as much as i love the parents and am happy to see them back -- the same names? the same character traits? ... at least they don't have the whole "fighting parents" plotline going on, too... yet.

it also barely has any scenes that take place outside the boarding place... which makes it feel a bit stir-crazy to me. i am hoping for a lot of school scenes or something around seoul to make the show feel more grounded and real.

it's not that it's necessarily BAD, but so far it feels like if they're just going to repeat plot points i might as well rewatch 1997. of course i'm going to keep watching because it's only been two episodes and i have faith in the writers that they value their work. ^-^

i'm going to assume a lot of the echoing traits are just to draw in reply 1997 fans and make them comfortable before they move into new territory.

love the cute friendship between sam cheon po and haetae, and i enjoyed them all describing the difficulties of big-city life which was pretty much skipped right over in reply 1997. looking forward to the exposition of chilbongi and bingeure's characters, too.

im excited to watch this.

it's not necessary to have watched reply 1997 first, right?

correct. it's completely independent plotwise.  it's not a sequel nor a prequel, just a drama with the same concept of nostalgia+coming of age.

i liked episodes 3 and 4 alright, though i'm starting to get repeat junhee vibes from bingrae. it's kinda seeming to me that he has a crush on Trash -- not that it wouldn't be cute, but i mean that's basically exactly the same as junhee's crush on yunjae from 1997.

however, i could just be misreading his character, as it seems like he has another potential plotline unfolding.

involving his not wanting to be in the medical field for whatever reason

i'm starting to really like chilbong's character.

love how he has basically fallen for "country bumpkin" speech, it's just funny and kind of an interesting foil to the "ugh i have to learn to speak like i'm from seoul"

kinda not that interested in the main character, though. she feels a little less connectable than shiwon from 1997... she is kind of angry all the time and when she gets happy it's not as entertaining. the other girl seems to have a more interesting array of expressions.

here's one of the songs featured in ep 4 for those of you interested:

the title is literally "arabian night." it's fun, upbeat, and there's even a WEIRD AS FUCK english story section after 2:05 ...

WITH BEAUTIFUL PALACES, HORSES, THIEV-VES, AND HEROS

this song was played in episode 6. can't remember exactly when it was XD

the title is "perhaps this is..." (or "perhaps that was," i haven't really gone through the lyrics so idk if it's a regret song or a discovery song)by Choi Yong Joon. it's from 1989 apparently.

*/too bad i'm probably the only one here who cares a lot about the music of the Reply 19XX series.*

anyway, as for the thing everybody is freaking out about:

gifs because adorable:

tumblr_mvnehx03Y21rqdzb7o2_250.giftumblr_mvnehx03Y21rqdzb7o1_250.gif

technically it's still open-ended. i expect them to write binggeurae's character to being junhee's red car lover from reply 1997, but i can't help but still hope for binggeurae+trash while there is still probably an episode or two of leeway left before trash is 100% confirmed interested in najung.

but regardless, it's still insane that they had the two male actors kiss and aired it on TV (ableit cable), especially since it's obvious one of the characters is ACTUALLY interested romanticaly. and MAN, trash is hot.

love chilbong and trash the best as characters, i think. though chilbong may be a bit over proper, he is so adorable and understanding. the other girl is on the verge of being pretty cool.

OMGGG guysss i'm totally in loooove with ep 6

when that baseball player kissed her (forgot his name) and the camera showed everyone and they were all sleeping and then stopped on Trash and he was awake I swear to god i felt butterflies in my stomach i just.... I CAN'T EXPLAIN MA FEEEEELS!  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:  :ahmagah:

And I don't think she is gonna end up with trash ( thank god because i don't want it to be a typical ending even though i love them together ) when they showed some of his face it looked like it was  the baseball player I don't know his jaw didn't look like trash's jaw

and I saw the teaser for the next episode she looks like she is starting to have feelings for him

i've already seen the episode so i'm not bothered, but you might want to put any specific plot points in spoiler tags in the future because not everybody gets to watch each episode immediately.

LMAO!! @ the first part of episode 8. So good.

I think Yoon Jin might be my favorite character. XD

OMG The scary movie scene! This is the most entertained I've been since the drama started.

OMG!!

Yoon Jin married Sam Cheon Po!

yeah, she's my favorite, too. her and chil bong and trash.

i am starting to crazy ship najung and chilbong. maybe it's not for their chemistry but because chilbong's acting is making me really see his heartbreak. i can see and understand his emotions so well ;;

i was worried he was a little too perfect (outside of unrequited love, he has very few blaring flaws), but there are a few tiny hints that make him into a more real person in the recent few episodes.

yeah i'm not surprised nobody is seeing anything in the blurry image. these things are VERY sensitive and the patterns in them are extremely subtle (hence why you can't see them normally).

i was able to briefly make it out in one of the giant versions i saw on tumblr, but it was kind of painful because the resolution was so low.

more tips/tricks for getting the magic eye thing to work:

what i do to see them is cross my eyes and move myself up close. then i back away to natural distance my eyes kind of uncross slightly (by themselves) and the image appears. however, it's not the best idea to do that with a computer screen. i grew up with the books, so it's not really as painful, lol. there's probably a way to do it without getting super close, but idk it. maybe i'll practice now. (*edit: yeah you totally can do it without moving close. i just tried various bad focus "settings" with my eyes while crosseyed and held them for a few seconds before releasing a bit --> which is when the image appeared. if you are doing it right, you should be able to tell there is something odd BEFORE you let your eyes relax but you can't tell what it is until your eyes relax)

the trick for me: when you stare at something crosseyed/up-close, you should see two of something, right? it's (duh) because each eye is giving you a separate image and they don't line up properly. what you want to do, though, is try to get the two images of the puzzle from each eye to overlap as nicely as possible while making sure your eyes are still crossed. that's when i noticed there was something strange with the image, relaxed my eyes a bit, and saw the shape.

just remember you aren't LOOKING for a pattern. you are just staring at the center and the image pops out depending on if your eyes focus correctly (i.e. incorrectly :P).

question out of desperation:

by "we won't get an episode next week because of the MAMA awards," does that mean we will get 0 episodes next week or that we will only get 1 episode?

because i think i will die if we don't get any next week T^T

also, for anybody freaking out about not finding subs, here is the site i used:

ep 10 english subs (links to parts 2-5 are below the video). i don't know wtf is up with gooddrama this week, but it's been really late with both episodes -- maybe somebody is busy studying for a test or something, who knows. anyway, they aren't getting paid for it or anything so it's not a big deal especially since i found this other site in the time being.

i'm torn between 1994 and 1997. i liked the characters a lot in 97, the way the plot progressed fairly evenly through many years, and how the main romance was important but there were so many other plotlines going on, and the music was amazing. in 94, i think the romance is written better (especially with no awk taewoong romance) and i love the characters in a different way... where in 97 i loved all the characters, in 94 i am completely invested in many of them. but there seems to be something missing. i think it's the way najung's plotline has been commandeered for the love line and her previous fangirling and stuff has completely faded.

i'm a bit worried that since her love line is essentially the primary endpoint of the drama as established by the first episode she might not get much of a deep plot outsidr that. which is a shame because shiwon's fangirling was such an integral part to her character and the love line came as secondary.

94 has, with its characters gripping me and putting me into a 1994 ferver, a lot of potential to push past 1997 as my favorite drama. it just needs to realize itself a little more outside of the romance. 1997 was so all-around balanced... but we still have 10 more episodes of 1994 left to blow us away ^^

chilbong !!!

though possibly haetae depending on what happens between them in the next ten episodes since their personalities mesh well.

i don't see binggeure happening at all at this point and trash i would rather NOT have sating najung.

i would like trash and binggeure to be a thing, but i'm not holding my breath for that to work out -- the main reasons i don't want him and najung together lie elsewhere. they are sweetly siblinglike, trash didn't go to the beach when he got free time, it's too 'perfect' for najung who still has to learn how to be an adult and accept that first love usually doesn't work out, etc... but at least they have a cute relationship together, so i wouldn't hate it if trash x najung were the result (unlike with the main couple from I Hear Your Voice, ugh)

done watching ep 10. trash such a jerk for chose hanging out rather than running to samcheonpo (go chilbong!)

wow, i'm happy that a lot of people siding as chilbong team.

for me, the interaction between trash and najeong exactly similar to me and my big bro... so i feel disgusting if they ended up married. their chemistry looks more like sibling than couple.

i got this rumor (dont remember where...myb this forum? or another place?) that trash couldnt be the husband, because:

1. he's gay. or

2. he made his girlfriend pregnant so he has to marry her (?)

i almost believe this rumor because... trash likes najeong, najeng already confessed, so why trash didnt just accept her and becomes a couple? aish, complicated man (sorry too much rant)

i think he might be gay. if he isn't, then i assume at least binggeure is. it seems like the writers are trying to tease the possibility, though i can't figure out if they intend to make it into a serious thing. regardless, though, i don't think he's interested in najung, especially after NOT running to samcheonpo like chilbong did. chilbong...

i love you, but why did you have to say the "i'm not giving up" line. that's a death sentence in dramas!

plus they seem to be implying that the baseball assistant girl has one of those give-them-a-rough-time crushes, so they may push that as chilbong's endgame.

loving haetae and najeong's interactions here! they go together better than her and chilbong (even though chilbong is amazing, he and najeong don't necessarily have that matching personalities) without the naivety and brother/sister vibes of the trash x najeong ship.

regardless, i hope they add more several-episode plotlines to the side characters so that there's more meat to the flow of the drama and make it more worth rewatching even when we already know who the husband is after our first watch.

okay can someone please help me?

why does chilbong and najung act like they never kissed? I mean they should be at least shy in front of each other or something but nope livin' like any normal day...

najeong was being very visible careful around chilbong. she didn't call him to be the date for the friend, and was pretty shaken when she saw him and his friend. she was also trying to avoid trying to hurt him when chilbong asked her if she was going (her face: wtf wtf wtf do i saaaayyyyy).

but other than that, i think it's been like three months in the storyline since the last episode (samcheonpo and yoonjin mention they've been together for 3 months and their first visible couple moment on the show was the kiss last episode).

episode 12 impressions

trash really pissed me off in this episode. he knows so much about women and their feelings but he is kinda toying with najung. like, i know he cares and he just wants it to be special, but there's a point where you are just causing unnecessary stress. glad that part's over with, but...

them in the car and at the restaurant. FUCK, trash. what are you doing? she's clearly pissed, so LEAVE IT. don't mess up her food, mess it up more, then poke at her when she very clearly doesn't want to be poked. while i think their feelings for each other are cute, their actual relationship in practice is really annoying for me. i hope they grow past each other, but it's growing increasingly unlikely as the show continues. looks like it's going to be a 1997 repeat.

the older brother really DOES come off as quite helpless (oh my god, i can't believe he thinks he's attractive to women enough that a wink will have them after him, lol).

on the good side, the scenes around the department store collapse were well handled (although the cut off to a few months later was a BIT too sudden in the flow of the episode). najung witnessing the emergency response vehicles and the beepers going off was quite chilling without being super graphic, but it was also good that they showed more graphic and explicit scenes as well.

it was nice to see bing's brother back. he is cute! and is it just me or did he catch sight of something odd in the relationship between bing and trash (in the sense that he might become aware of bing's one-sided affections). i hope if bing is indeed crushing on trash that they don't play it out long like in 1997. not that it wouldn't be cute, but it'd just add to a list of things that feel carbon-copied from 1997.

haetae is really becoming quite amazing. he shows the side of stereotypical straight guys that everyone knows (BOOBS! YES. LEGS TOO! KISSING IS GREAT) while also expressing that there is actually quite a bit of depth that is hidden behind that outward face. also his feelings for najung (if not romantic feelings, then close emotional connection) are very strongly visible despite the limited and subtle moments he has to express them. props for great acting on his part!

"if right now isn't the time, then I have to wait"

he is such an optimistic guy seriously.

as cute as it is, i wish he would say

"if right now isn't the time, then I have to move on"

i would rather a thoughtful sweetheart like chilbong happy than pining over someone who it seems like won't be falling for him. that's just my impression given that she hasn't really been affected by his earlier efforts, plus "i'll wait for her to like me" is pretty much a romance death sentence in dramas
