How to get over fear of flying?

I had no problem with flying when I was younger, but ever since I got on roller coasters, I started to have fear of flying. I become terrified and my heart beats really fast whenever the plane takes off. It got even worse because of the plane crashes that happened in 2014 and 2015.

I will go to Germany to visit my father next Thursday. I keep thinking that I won't be able to survive the long 10-hour flight. I can't ignore the thought that I may die since the possibility does exist.

The thought that I have no control over it terrifies me too. What if the pilot is a psycho just like the co-pilot of the Germanwings crash?

Could you guys give me some advice?

I used to be a little scared of flying too...I haven't been in a plane since those plane crashes (not for that reason, just coincidence).

All the above tips are great!

Things I'd say:

- (this has already been said) Think of your bias groups and how they go in planes all the time. They're clearly fine and really awesome people.

- most planes have screens or devices you can use, which are different depending on what class you travel in, but I travelled in economy class (lowest) and they had them there. Make sure to preoccupy yourself playing games and listening to music on them, it helps a lot. I'm pretty sure they didn't have k-pop on the plane I went on, but I wasn't into k-pop then, so who knows?

- with the theme of above point, just keep distracted. Even if you just focus on how much you like (or dislike) the food, it's great to have something to focus on that's not to do with danger.

- (i'm assuming you really do want to go to the place you're going to here) before getting on the plane, and on the plane, just think of how much you want to get where you are going.

- I'm not usually optimistic at all, but if you're worrying throughout the whole flight, you will enjoy it so much less than if you don't worry at all. I know it's hard, but it will be so much more enjoyable if you maintain a positive mentality.

- You'll be fine!

- sorry for the pep talk
