What baffles me about SMRookies

So the thing with rookies is I'm so confused about the system. Like I know that it's a way to publicize SM's roster of trainees, what I don't get is do every trainee have to be part of SMRookies to ensure debut?

Does a trainee pay a premium to be part of it? Joy wasn't on it, but she debuted with RV. It really is baffling, or is it like the top of trainee system where if you excel you get to be a part of it.

I still haven't quite gotten the question itself. Lol. All I know is the system confuses me.

Rookies don't pay for anything. SMRookies is the name given to rookies SM deemed worthy enough of a public presentation before debut. It's by no mean an official thing, like half of Exo was basically unknown before the debut teasers.

So if they're part of the rookies, they are already under some sort of contract?

Its not just you. It confuses the shit out of me too

Lol, it's hella confusing. It's great for public recognition, though

Are all the rookies shown guaranteed to debut?

That I'd like to ask too

They might be. The reddit SM trainee guy said there were contracts that guaranteed a debut. So they might be on those contracts, because there are young trainees who won't be debuting for a few more years.

No. There was a rookie shown when the first teasers came out and he left SM shortly after that. He went onto an audition show in China but I think he didn't pass the preliminaries.

which one was that?

He's the strong looking one right? Jong something. I think his name surfaced around the time Taeil came out

Joy mentioned once in an interview she didnt want to be a part of SMROOKIES. I can't find it now tho

I think its a mix of both sm wanting you to be a part of it and you having the confidence in it.

is it youngju? he was at the coex thing but never in the site, those on the site are def debuting

Jeesu and Winny were at their teasers too and even performed at smtown but left before being introduced in the site

While every trainee headed toward debut is considered an SM Rookie, it seems like they were focusing on certain trainees so they can gain a possible fanbase. Joy not being part of it might have just been because they weren't sure of the reception she would get on her own before debuting with RV. They're probably still ironing out issues and more trainees will be revealed once their boy group debuts.

Edit: oh, she chose not to. Welp

Oh really? Maybe those sure of their loyalty to SM agrees to it. Is it a possibility they're receiving pay prior to debut?

1. There's no guarantee that any Rookie will ever debut, but some most likely will

2. Rookies don't pay for anything

3. Some trainees are not part of rookies most likely because SM thinks that exposing all member before debut is not advantageous

Thanks for this, probably number 9 is another case of a "Joy"

Well it's better than to have them go head to head on survival shows TBH, but isn't it cheaper that way

being a rookie won't guarantee anything i don't think, the only people guaranteed to debut are people put in the debut team and even then they can be switched out. yeri and joy weren't smrookies keep in mind.

I thought Yeri was an smrookie? She was in the video promoting Happiness.

I don't think so as they are regular trainees. The rookie system is just like a better way to do pre-debut activities

I don't remember seeing her anywhere but there, she was a regular trainee as far as i know

SMROOKIES is a pre-debut team of trainees currently practicing under SM Entertainment. SMROOKIES will introduce SM’s new “Co-Creation†system. Fans will be able to participate in preliminary events and showcases before the official debut. The rookies will have the freedom to form different groups with each other, and show their day-to-day lives and practices to their fans. These rookies will also participate in concert and variety shows to win the hearts of fans. We can also expect covers of songs by their company’s seniors and their own originally composed songs in open performances to showcase their talents. According to SM Entertainment on December 3, SM Rookies is a new star-in-the-making brand that will highlight the pre-debut team of SM trainees. The agency announced that it plans on unveiling more and more about these rookies so that the audience can get familiar with the rookies as they work toward becoming a star. Ahead of their official debut, the rookies will be releasing songs and participating in a variety of activities.

Yes she was a smrookie. Actually, smrookie members who have their profile posted on smrookies' official website are guaranteed to debut. formor smrookies like Yongju, Winny, and Jeesu haven't got their profile posted on the official website. Besides, sm already invested so many money to promote them like SMROOKIES Show, Mickey Mouse Club, MBC Show Champion MCs, Abnormal Summit cast, etc. It will be wasted if they don't debut them later.

Edit : Yeri once performed with other smrookies girls in SMTOWN in 2014. You can search the videos in youtube. She's supposed to be the leader for the smrookies girls btw.

the older smrookies for sure they'll debut its the younger ones i am not sure about they have many years before debut and if any of them wants to quit in between though chances are very slim.

the people that get to be part of smrookies are those which sm considers top or worth being introduced to public. they keep atleast 1-2 trainees(potential group members) hidden because they know its worth its like suspense  and keeps people interested.

i think you're  talking about yongju but he and his team won the show

The thing is, I'm not familiar with Johnny's system  :derp:

In JE rookies are calles Johnny's Junior. They are split into a number of groups, they do backdancing/band for debuted groups, they have their own tv show, magazines and they hold concerts (cover senior's songs), star in dramas. They have a huge fanbase and they make plenty of money before debut. A minority of them debut actually. For example KAT-TUN were a very popular group for 2-3 years before they debuted, they held a number of sold-out concerts and even performed at Music Station.

Some people here say that SM will debut all rookies because otherwise it's a waste of money, but, if SM will continue following JE system, the rookies will stay as a permanent thing and it will make them money.

Now that you've said it, it kinda is really similar. I just remembered all JP boys I've ever liked are under JE
