Chinese Film Fans Please Help!

So, for one of my classes I'm supposed to write a paper about a Chinese film of my choice.

However, I had never seen a Chinese film until this class (actually maybe just Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).

Can anyone recommend me a film? Preferably a romantic comedy or an action comedy. I recently watched the Wedding Banquet! If anyone could suggest something like that, I'd really appreciate it.

Honestly, if you have a suggestion and it doesn't fit these limits, still recommend it! Anything that you think lends itself to being analyzed. It has to be a movie directed by a Chinese, Taiwanese, or Hong Kong director (we looked at some Ang Lee films so I guess Taiwanese- American counts too).

This is actually the first topic I've ever done so sorry to the mods if I put it in the wrong place.

Crouching Tiger is average at best. I would forget about Shaolin Soccer also, or at least for now. Stephen Chow's older movies are better. Something like Love on Delivery or the first two Fight Back To School movies are better. I don't see why people love Shaolin Soccer so much...

Something that might be fun to analyze is the differences between Infernal Affairs and it's american remake, The Departed. I find IA to be more of a drama where the Departed faster paced almost like an action/suspense movie.

Anyways my suggestions would be my 3 favorite chinese movies: Red Cliff 1 and 2 (they go together so i'm counting it as one), In The Mood For Love, and Infernal Affairs.

You Are The Apple Of My Eye is the one that Id suggest. Its from a Taiwanese director based on his own book about his life. I'd describe it as romantic drama with some comedy. It revolves around a group of friends growing up and how life affects them along the way, and focuses on the relationship of a boy and girl with a will they/ wont they be together vibe. To say any more would spoil it but I highly recommend it, even if you dont choose it for this particular paper.

It was one of the most successful movies in Taiwan and China too, both commercially and critically. Good luck with the paper!
