At least two foreign tourists have been injured in an attack at a hotel in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Hurghada.

Egyptian state TV says local security forces repelled the attack and one assailant has been killed.

The attack took place at the Bella Vista hotel. Reports vary as to the nationalities of the victims, and whether they were shot or stabbed.

Egypt is battling Islamist militants based in the nearby Sinai peninsula, including an Islamic State affiliate.

A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said they were "urgently investigating" the reports from Hurghada.

He did not know whether any Britons might be affected.

An attack on a bus at a hotel near the Giza pyramids on Thursday was claimed by IS, which said it was targeting "a tourist bus carrying Jews".

Egyptian officials said no-one was hurt in the attack, near Cairo. Arab Israeli tourists were staying at the hotel, reports said.

Hurghada is on the Red Sea coast, across the water from the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, from where the Russian passenger plane which crashed in the Sinai peninsula took off on 31 October.

After that crash, which killed 224 people and was claimed by so-called Islamic State, the UK and other European countries halted flights to Sharm el-Sheikh, citing security fears.

Russia also stopped all flights to Egypt.

This is sad but I don't know why people are still taking vacations to Egypt, especially after the Russian plane bomb. The middle east right now is a mess. If you're not from there, I would advice everyone to avoid going there for vacation.

true the region is a mess , even if the vacation fees are low , i would not risk my life and go there
