风正è§è§å¤©æœªç ´æ™“夜太凉
人离散 梦难想

rén lí sàn / mèng nán xiǎng
dàn mÄ›i gè xiÅng kÇ’u què gèng tàng

The wind is whistling right now, dawn hasn't broken, the night is too cool.
[We] are separated from one another. Dreams are hard to think of.
But the center of each chest [burns] more hotly.

人间用多少沧桑

huàn duŠshǎo rén de fēng kuáng
luàn shì zǎo wǎn huì gǎn shàng
yÇ lái bù jí gÇŽnshÄng

The human world uses how many vicissitudes
To trade for how many people's madness?
Troubled times will catch up [to us] sooner or later.
It's already too late for sorrow.

Let darkness blacken to the point of swallowing up all hope.
Only then can [you] find the light within the blood.
So lonely, and yet so endless and stubborn.

Let darkness blacken to the point of losing all sense of direction.
Only then can [you] feel who remains by [your] side,
Still waiting together for that one
Distant and yet delightful daybreak.

dàn zǒng suàn wǒ men hái yǒu bàn

Who'll care for the faintly discernible [nature] of life and death, the intolerably painful [quality] of love and hate?
The sound of the guqin is chaotic. The gleam of the sword is cold.
But at least we still have company.

人间用多少沧桑
笑多少执迷疯狂
乱世把我们赶上
就还它一点光

rén jiÄn yòng duÅ shÇŽo cÄng sÄng
xiào duŠshǎo zhí mí fēng kuáng
luàn shì bǎ wǒ men gǎn shàng
jiù huán tÄ yÄ« diÇŽn guÄng

The human world uses how many vicissitudes
To laugh at how much obsessive madness?
[if] trouble times catch up to us,
[We'll] give a bit of light back to them.

Thank you renn, it's such a sad yet hopeful song.  I'm also learning some new English words

Whoever decided on the English title of the song (The Dawn) missed out on conveying a nuance of the Chinese title, which actually refers to predawn rather than dawn itself (lit. sky will brighten, where the combination of sky-brighten is how you say "dawn"). A bit cheesy, but you know, the darkest hour and all that. xD

Words... I'm guessing "vicissitudes"? It's a neat word that, for me at least, strikes a balance between descriptive and concise, even if it is a bit of a rarity in common spoken English. I've used it a number of times in my translations because 沧桑 comes up a lot in Chinese lol. I've stopped putting in the note about seas and mulberry fields (i.e. what actual metaphor is) though.

I could've sworn I posted a reply last night...

I'm sure it was some random PR at HiM that doesn't have enough English understanding.  I think it's the same effort with their English titles for dramas, China knows there's an international market but don't care enough to translate it meaningfully.  The title makes more sense now that you elaborated, not cheesy imo but I can see how others can see it that way.

Yes, you guessed the right word, however, I've learn quite a few from your past translations too.  I look up the meaning and then I can understand why you chose the words you do (very fitting) and I gain an extra word to my vocab.
