South Korea to resume propaganda broadcasts

SEOUL, South Korea — A day after North Korea claimed to have tested a hydrogen bomb, South Korea said Thursday that it would resume propaganda broadcasts at the countries’ border that infuriated the North last summer.

The South will turn on its batteries of so-called propaganda loudspeakers at the heavily armed border at noon Friday, said Cho Tae-yong, a senior national security adviser to President Park Geun-hye. In August, the Koreas appeared on the verge of armed conflict partly because of the broadcasts, which the South used to blare news of the outside world and criticism of Pyongyang, as well as bouncy South Korean pop music, into the tightly controlled country.

Mr. Cho’s announcement came after top national security officials met in Seoul to discuss a response to the North’s nuclear test on Wednesday. North Korea said it had detonated a hydrogen bomb, a vastly more powerful weapon than the nuclear devices it has tested three times before, but experts were extremely skeptical of that claim.

How's that philosophy working out in Cologne?

If you are seeking to somehow co-relate the tit-for-tat posturing between North and South Korea with the systematic assaults carried out against womenfolk in Cologne, and you cannot see the entirely distinguishable differences in the situations, I don't think we can have a fruitful conversation, so I'll pass.

The situations are identical: allow existential evil to advance, and it advances.  If North Korea could be negotiated with, it would have happened long ago.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind... :wth:

What possible benefit (other than posturing for the sake of posturing) will this have?

And whatever the perceived benefit, how can it be worth the risk of escalating the existing tensions?

I wouldn't say this is an eye for an eye. The loudspeakers are not threatening mass violence as nuclear tests do.

I am just hoping that all those young men (and women) putting their lives on the line whether voluntarily or not will be safe from any harm.
