Heterophobia?

Cloud Of Perception

Recommended Posts

I was having a discussion with one of my friends today and this topic came up, he said that his girlfriend was speaking about this and saying this is becoming an issue for her since some of her classmates according to her make remarks that are "heterophobic" and also were isolating her because she is straight now I take it with a grain of salt because I was not there and can in no way confirm if this is indeed fact but the whole idea was news to me because I have never heard of such a term, do you believe it exists and if you do how prevalent is it.   I would like to hear others opinion on the matter.

I've never heard of that term before. Apparently, this is what it means http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Heterophobia, https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/heterophobia. I don't know how true these definitions are because I've never come across the term tho

Never heard of this before.. is it supposed to be similar to reverse racism or something? Definitely isn't prevalent or a real issue imo, as a heterosexual I have never had to face the systematic discrimination and persecution that members of the LGBT community experience on a daily basis.

It's not real, because straight people still have huge advantages and can't be oppressed on a large scale like anyone who isn't straight is. One person being "isolated" for being straight doesn't make it heterophobia

If you don't like a person because they're straight, then you are a heterophobe. There doesn't need to be mass oppression. Oppression is oppression. Heterophobia is heterophobia. They're different things.

maybe im wrong, but "heterophobia" sounds as legit as "reverse racism"

^ this. I'm sure there are some people that hate straight people/white people (like very rarely so in theory it exists) but like, in practice discrimination occurs through power imbalance etc., so these really don't exist in actuality.

i've never seen it irl the way you see other discrimination (i see it on places like tumblr) anyways, realistically you can hate or 'be afraid' in terms of the 'phobia' of anything. i think people too much turn it into a contest like, majorities (in contrast to minority) like heteros can't be subject to discrimination b/c theyre a 'majority'. like it's horrible anyone faces discrimination...majority or minority, just because it doesn't happen as often doesn't mean it's nonexistent. like why make it a contest of so&so is hurt more than this&that group of people. bottom line: discrimination is bad. regardless, it's bad, it's mean.
