I had this thread opened the whole shift earlier because of the photoshoot!

I even had a few of my colleagues take a look at it and said... isn't he handsome??!?!

I don't care if they didn't feel the same way since they like western looks more but I just had to express my feels that time!

NYLON Korea December 2013 Interview -  Yoon DuJun & Lee GiKwang

 

We met with Lee GiKwang and Yoon DuJun. It was their first meeting with <NYLON>, but as they already experienced many filming and interviews, we didn't want to have a boring conversation with them. So we decided to have a conversation about their acting which they never talked deeply about before. Including their mid-20s men story.

 

 

 

NYLON: It's your first meeting with <NYLON>.
DuJun: It was sad that we never got to appear in <NYLON> before. This time we're the cover models, right? It's an honor. (laughs)
GiKwang: It's a bit empty with only us two and not with all the BEAST members, but I'm happy to be able to meet with the readers of <NYLON>.

 

NYLON: Today we put a focus on actors than singers. We also plan to talk more about acting in the interview.
DuJun: An actor... Truthfully the title 'actor' is awkward. Also in taking pictures, films have a continuous feel, but should I say in a picture when the shutter is pressed it reveals everything of me. I still feel a pressure but I will do my best by going back to the original/beginning heart.
GiKwang: I debuted as a singer and acted before but it feels like I haven't accomplished anything yet as an actor. I think it'll be a fun photo shoot as it's a different concept.

 

NYLON: The dramas where both are the main characters will air soon. It's already your fourth work, is it different from when you first acted?
GiKwang: <High Kick Through the Roof> was a work that I started not too long after I debuted so it was awkward and hard. But now I've done several works so compared to then it's comfortable and I am able to enjoy it. Of course, acting is still hard.
DuJun: Me too. Acting is acting but the filming areas felt very unfamiliar. When you film a drama, even the mechanical sounds disappear and the surroundings become very quiet. Other than the other person and my voice, there is a still silence. At those times I had a strange feeling. I also became nervous. I'm still inexperienced in acting. But I'm thankful for the continuous opportunities.

 

NYLON: What do you think of the an 'actor who is originally a singer' tag? As the general public gives a large attention, isn't the pressure also great?
DuJun: Obviously. But I think nowadays with many [singers] who are just as great in acting as original actors, many are taking off their colored glasses. If you do your best then you will earn that much result. Doesn't it matter on how one does?
GiKwang: Yes. There are many who act really well and can't be differentiated if they were originally singers or actors. I think that the prejudice is disappearing slowly. When I act for a drama, I start by telling myself that, "I am an actual actor. I am a pro."

 

NYLON: Actors who went through a long obscure life have more life experience than idol-origin actors. As their faces haven't been made known public so they are free to be in relationships and sometimes become corrupt. 
DuJun: Acting from experience. I think with my short acting career I haven't thought deeply about that. Won't I feel it when I gain more know-how and when I'm more mature in my acting... As I feel that difficulty I'm still inexperienced in many ways.
GiKwang: I think that the acting between a person who has experienced it before and a person who imagines it is different. Even if it's a character with a small role. In love, break up, relationships, won't you act better if you have had more experience and sensitivity from it?

NYLON: Then have you tried to gain those experiences without the company [CUBE] knowing of it?
GiKwang: No, not like that. (laughs) When I start acting, I try to watch as much movies or dramas that has similar characters and background. I learn a lot by watching repeatedly and concentrating on how other actors acted as they are real pros. Even if I don't experience firsthand, I can feel many things indirectly.

 

NYLON: Do you have a role model?
DuJun: There's too many. 
NYLON: If you had to choose one?
DuJun: It's too hard. Um... Ha JungWoo sunbaenim! He looks great with a heavy and serious role, but in the movie <Love Fiction>  he acts in his own self of a light character. He spoke bluntly a lot but it had a charm to it. 
GiKwang: As they have different areas where they are good at, I can't choose one person. In any actors, the aspects I want to learn from them are all different. I want to learn all of it fully to make them mine.
DuJun: (Pointing at GiKwang) He's a really greedy person.

 

NYLON: Then have you thought 'I really want to try that role'? Recent ones or past ones are fine.
GiKwang: It's not a movie or drama but a music video called 'Love Story' where Rain sunbaenim comes out. It was a role where he was a제비? But it was cool how he showed a playful side and a manly side at the same time. 
NYLON: And DuJun?
DuJun: Ko GwangRyeol acted by Yu HaeJin sunbaenim in <Tazza: The High Rollers>! I watched this movie about 10 times. I think I've watched over 20 times the scene where he goes to GoNi's house to give back the money instead. It was so funny. (Even after he finished answering, he continued to laugh for a while)

 

NYLON: Both of you acted in different works. How would it be like to act in the same drama/movie?
GiKwang: I appeared as a cameo in <All My Love>!
DuJun: It was really funny then. Seeing someone you know in person acting in front of you, it was so funny that I couldn't make eye contact with him. Try imagining. Your real mom acting as your mom and your real friend acting as a friend.
NYLON: How about like the movie <City of the Rising Sun> where two male actors are the main or the drama <Something Happened in Bali> with a love triangle?
GiKwang: I don't think a love triangle will work... A comic genre!
DuJun: If we get serious I think there's going to be a problem. As we just laugh when we see each other.
GiKwang: It gives me chills when I think about it. "She's my woman!"
DuJun: (Grabbing GiKwang's collar) "This guy!"

 

NYLON: Recently Yong JunHyung appeared in the drama <Monstar>.
DuJun: I watched a bit.
NYLON: Did you monitor the drama as a sunbae [senior] in acting?
DuJun: I didn't. We're not in the position to critique each other.
NYLON: You could have made comments as a viewer.
GiKwang: We make fun of him. Not by watching the whole thing from beginning to end but with funny lines or expressions on some scenes.
DuJun: The viewers might be fine with it but we've known each other for nearly 7~8 years, so it's weird when we see others acting cool as a different person. That's why we don't monitor.

 

NYLON: Are there anything else you want to talk about acting?
GiKwang: It's always hard to be fully immersed in a character and act it out. When I did it myself I really felt it. I think that singers or actors sunbaes who do well are amazing.
DuJun: GiKwang said everything that was in my mind.

 

NYLON: Then let's talk about something different. What do you normally do when you're resting?

DuJun: I play football.

NYLON: We heard that you were a football player.
DuJun: I was only in it for a little bit. Now I'm in a football team with GiKwang but not long ago I injured my hamstring... 

GiKwang: He's out for the season!
DuJun: Yes, I won't be able to play football for a few months. (He looked quite sad while saying this)
GiKwang: That's why I go alone.
NYLON: Do you go cheer for GiKwang when he plays football?
GiKwang: No. I'm not a national player or anything so why come watch me. Also nowadays it's cold.
DuJun: Yes. If you don't actually play then it's not a fun game. (Laughs)

 

NYLON: Do you shop often?
DuJun: Yes, I like shopping. I normally buy clothes. GiKwang buys clothes too but he really likes accessories. Are you tired today? Why don't you have any? Usually his wrist is a hardware store. Metals hanging [on his wrist].
NYLON: What style do you like?
GiKwang: I like everything that's pretty. Just last year I visited specific brand type shops and would go see new items when they were in but... as I wore more cool and nice clothes during shows and photo shoots, my standard rose. For me and all the members too. Now even if it's a street brand or a designer brand, it's more important if it matches me.
DuJun: In a negative way it was really bad last year. The members have similar tastes but we couldn't buy the same items so someone would pre-order first. But the funny thing was that when the clothes we bought became out of season, we would feel like we couldn't wear them because it wasn't the trend. That's why now I shop for my own style. I finally came to my senses.

 

NYLON: Do you drink [alcohol] a lot? I drank a lot in my mid-20s.
DuJun: When I drink my face turns red. Sometimes after a concert is finished I drink to feel good but I don't drink often. GiKwang drinks well but he doesn't drink a lot because he's taking care of his body. 
GiKwang: It doesn't happen often but I like drinking with friends. When I'm resting, rather than being by myself, I like talking with them while drinking one or two beer cans.

 

NYLON: We were looking forward to a funny episode but that's sad. Then as a man, who has more charms?
DuJun: GiKwang. 

GiKwang: (Laughs) DuJun...
NYLON: Then tell us 3 charms of the other person. Starting with DuJun.
DuJun: GiKwang is cute, sexy, and handsome.
NYLON: Not something everyone knows.
DuJun: Oh... He's pure!
NYLON: He looks pure though.
GiKwang: No. Many people don't see me as someone pure/innocent. I think they see me as someone who played around a lot.
DuJun: But when you get to know him you feel that he is pure. Also he doesn't speak a lot and is quiet.
GiKwang: I've appeared in many entertainment programs so many think that I'm a talkative and funny style but normally I'm more of a listener than a speaker.
DuJun: But when he laughs he cracks up. His reserved/taciturn charm and the third is that he has a lot of innate talents. I think that he learns faster than others and he's skilled in singing, dancing, acting, etc. I also think 'if he was just tall than wouldn't he have been perfect'... (Looks at GiKwang's response) Well his height is good too.
GiKwang: (Laughs) Ah... it's really funny. Thank you.
DuJun: We say 'GiKwang, if you were 10cm taller than you would have calmed the music world' often.
NYLON: Why his height? Isn't it fine if he has small face and his proportions are good.
DuJun: Of course, I wanted this response.
NYLON: Then now GiKwang tell us DuJun's charms.
GiKwang: Our DuJun has a kind and tender heart that is different from his manly look. Also he jokes a lot so he's in charge of the team's mood maker, and he's a good friend who likes funny things. It's things nobody knows about right?
NYLON: Yes, because we haven't experienced it firsthand.
GiKwang: Also um... he's very determined. Till the decision he's worried about it a lot but when he decides on something, his strive for it is amazing.
DuJun: (laughs) Now let's move on to the next question.

 

NYLON: If I didn't become a celebrity, what would I be doing. Have you thought about that before?
DuJun: A physical education teacher.
NYLON: You would have been very popular.
DuJun: No. If I wasn't a celebrity then I would have been different from now. Even though I didn't do plastic surgery I still take care of myself often. When I compare myself to older photos then I feel that I have changed a bit.
NYLON: Girls high school? Boys high school? Where would you have wanted to teach at?
DuJun: At a co-ed school. I would like the cheers from the high school girl students but I also like running around and exercising with the boys.
GiKwang: Me, I think just an ordinary university student? I think I would have spent my time going to school, studying, working part time jobs, and drinking with friends during the weekends. Truthfully till 9th grade I was just like any other student. My grades were good and I was good at sports so my mother said that she would like it if I became a police officer. I spent my time agreeing to my parents wish but got chosen when I went to an audition without them knowing. My parents were very surprised as they never expected me to become a celebrity, but they watched over me when I told them I wanted to try it.
NYLON: A police officer matches you too.
DuJun: In the drama <Me Too, Flower!> he played a police officer role and the uniform fit him well.
GiKwang: I looked like a child police officer.

 

NYLON: The interview is coming to an end. Do you have any personal goals and are there any BEAST's promotional plans for 2014?
DuJun: Whenever I receive this question I always respond in the same way but, I hope to laugh more next year than this year. Mid-20s is like that. You open your eyes to reality and it's the time when you have more worries about the future. When I see my friends they're getting stressed on getting work... I just hope everyone would be able to laugh more.
GiKwang: As I become older I feel that my stamina is changing day to day.
DuJun: Yes. I injured myself by just running with an injured hamstring.
GiKwang: When I was a trainee I would practice till the early mornings and exercise twice a day and I wasn't tired. Now it's tiring even when I do once. That's why I feel that health is the most important. And also like DuJun's words I hope everyone is happy. Nowadays you see a lot of emotional sayings on Facebook. Is it because I'm getting sentimental in the fall, but I become sensitive when I read those sayings... Isn't health and happiness more important than money?

 

NYLON: BEAST's comeback plans?

GiKwang: Truthfully we don't even know our next week's schedule... (Laughs)
DuJun: There's no specific plans but we plan to actively promote in 2014 too.

 

 

NYLON: Lastly, please say something to <NYLON>'s readers.
DuJun: December is always special. There's Christmas and year end, it snows a lot, and is it because of that there's a fluttering feeling. Have a happy time with your friend, lover, family and I hope to have a prosperous year in 2014 with <NYLON>. (Laughs)
GiKwang: Each December 31 is a special day for all the singers. On that night MBC hosts its <Gayo Daejejeon>. From there we've welcomed the new year for 4 years and to think that that day is returning makes me think 'time goes by fast.' Anyways lovers, family, and solos with friends, happily finish off the rest of the year and I hope we will all start next year with a fluttering heart and energy.
