Is it true that Americans don't understand British humour?

Yeah definitely, I can't speak for Americans themselves but the humor is quite different. I'm obsessed with Gordon Ramsey shows and as I was watching the UK version of Kitchen Nightmares I compared it with the US one and the latter was a lot more dramatized and upbeat whereas the UK one was so laid back and even with the immense curse words it wasn't stressful to watch. I think this applies to comedy shows similarly. Being Australian I can understand the UK humor, because we're not that different and I guess it's why I loved shows like Faulty Towers and Blackadder (Similar humor to something like Mother & Son from Aus.

Americans can't tell whenever the British are using banter and sarcasm.

Apparently in a way

"British seems so smart that we know we arent stupid, so if we say stupid shit, oh bugger its just jolly ol sarcasm, meanwhile Americans think eveyone is stupid, so if you say stupid shit you're probably supid" - Dexter Manning
