And I think I screwed it up. They asked me why I wanted to work with them, and I blurted , "Because the workplace is convenient for me to come to" .... I was pretty blank, all my preparations disappeared ahaha.

Anyways I'm feeling depressed now, anyone wanna share their interview stories/tips?

Once for a sixth form interview they asked me about my hobbies, I said I enjoyed reading (which I do) she asked me what my favourite book was and I was completely blank, like I read so many books. I have stacks of books at home but I could not think of one and just used one I saw at the library a few days ago I then lied about reading this book and I made up the whole plot and the woman just sat there cackling at my dumb bitch ass, her face was literally as red as a tomato. After I left I realized that she must have read the book too as it was so popular they still accepted me but I didn't go to that sixth form.

The book was called "The Book Thief" I'm sure everybody has heard of it.

Sixth form = high school in the USA.

I was a Human Resource officer for two years before I decided to quit my job and go back to uni. And tbh, your answer will leave either a good or bad impression to the interviewer. As for me, I would think you're just being honest and that's good, but I would have preferred for you to give me one more reason besides that or at least justified your answer.. :) But we never know, you might still pass the interview. It's not the only question they asked you, right? Besides, it's still your first time, at least you'll know what to do next time.

Ouch. Well I hope you still get whatever position you were looking for. If you really feel like you screwed up your chances, maybe you can contact them (through e-mail?) asking for another opportunity.

I actually have my very first interview later today. The responses in this thread are making me even more nervous  :horror:

I don't have any horrifying interview stories which almost makes me more nervous because I'm sure my time will come.

I hate to be a downer, but yeah you have like 1% chance of getting that job now. That's the last thing a company wants to hear. One thing that got me my current job is I googled some of the company's history prior to the interview. When they asked what I knew about the company I was able to give a brief history on it. The boss was really impressed and gave me the second interview the very next day and at the second interview I was hired on the spot.

Another thing that probably helped was I was very overly enthusiastic in both interviews.

Oh also be wary for trick questions. Like I know in one interview  I went to the main question was what your favorite movie was. After we answered the lady told us that our answers told her everything she needed to know about our character. Unfortunately in that interview I wasn't thinking and told her the truth and said Ferris Bueller's Day Off... yeah didn't get that job. If you're asked that question answer an inspirational movie. Even if it isn't your favorite.

Conducted a round of interviews for a vacant secretarial position a couple of months back.  Being brutally honest here, more than half of the applicants were not even granted an interview because their CVs were so poorly written, replete as they were with spelling and/or grammar errors.  Of the shortlisted candidates, again, more than half were ruled out within the first 30 seconds of the interview because of the way they spoke/carried themselves.   Of the ones that remained under consideration for the job, all shared certain common traits: they carried themselves well (appropriately dressed, did not slouch in the chair when seated, etc), spoke with confidence, and, most importantly, exude a sense of enthusiasm.  Didn't matter if the enthusiasm was for the job they were being interviewed for; it could be for a particular hobby, for a movie, or for life in general.  Remember that the interviewer is looking for someone to join his/her company.  A debbie downer will never get to step a foot into the company's doorway; conversely, a person who is enthusiastic stands every chance of getting the job.

(Caveat: The vacant post in question does not require much professional or technical expertise; if the job specifications were more demanding, then obviously the qualifications of the candidates will be more important than their personal characteristics).

Finding out something about the history of the company is an excellent suggestion.  It shows a willingness to take the initiative; interviewers love it.

I disagree about the trick question part, though.  The interviewer is not trying to trick anyone, but is simply looking to find out more about the person being interviewed.  And there's nothing wrong with answering "Ferris Bueller's Day Off, although you can put a spin to your answer to create a good impression.  For instance, if the job you were applying for involves interaction with customers, you can add to your answer by referring to the disconnect that existed between Bueller's best buddy Cameron and his dad, saying that the movie made you realize the importance of maintaining communication channels between people, and tying it back to the job by suggesting that you are able to see things from the customers' perspective and will do a good job in trying to satisfy the customers' needs.

It's always better to be truthful in an interview.  Your body language can give you away if you try to lie.  Also, if you get the job, but the interviewer (now your boss or colleague) finds out later that you were fibbing, things can get awkward.

Late, but here's hoping you clinched the job (or get shortlisted for that second interview).  Hwaiting!
