Should Japan get rid of their Best New Artist categories at awards shows?

They're pretty pointless awards now, given that new artists don't really get much attention. In a country that cares less and less about new music, why honor acts simply because they are new? "Best Breakthrough Act" would be a better award to give out. It shows that a newer act has actually came into prominence as opposed to just being new. Like who of the Best New Artist nominees at this year's awards shows are actually notable to the public?

It would be better to see newer acts that are breaking through to the mainstream being awarded as opposed to new acts that are only really here because of label / management pushes with little / no actual success being awarded.

best new artists should get attention. but how many new artists get highlight? Breakthrough is better. how about both?

Even the random new acts that are promoted on a show like HEY! HEY! NEO! (a show for new acts) aren't really new. They've been around, they're just not mainstream.

in my country too it's still vague. like some soloist got breakthrough from his first single that kind viral but actually he isn't a new . he's a finalist from popular talent singing show from years ago. but for the shake of image that info never been mentioned. and if did recall back he ever release something under the show. but now promote as indie it's been mediaplay like he suddenly come nowhere and big hit. but he got nomination for best new artist in some award.

Maybe new acts shouldn't debut at all?

One of the things that I believed, that Japanese music industry is big enough even to keep the minor acts.

I actually think that those acts has potential into becoming something.

I don't what about you, but minor acts is the main things that keeps me hyped.

Breakthrough artist don't always equal new artists. Some can be out for a few years before they get a hit(and thus become a breakthrough). These wouldn't be new artists. Both should be kept...as for the criteria...I don't know. What do western award shows consider for their Best New Artist nominees?

EDIT: Come to think of it, how is this any different from movie award's category Best New Actor/Actress?
