They did something very different from the Mariah Carey version and, in a lot of ways, the Bom&Hi version was truer to the lyrics. The lyrics are actually sad and are about missing someone so much at Christmas time that the only thing your heart is longing for is that person. Mariah Carey sings it like a party song and that bubbly, upbeat style doesn't really match the lyrics when you think about it. But the Mariah Carey version has become such an iconic Christmas song that it's like a "classic" in a lot of people's minds...so I think a lot of the haters saw it as an opportunity to bash on Bom by making it into a popularity contest between Bom and Mariah Carey, instead of just letting people enjoy the very good and different version that Bom & Hi made.
