Gloupipoo 1,619
Religions are just bigger versions of sects and hence can be just as problematic as them?

ethereal 20,923
as a religious person, i think people should just believe whatever they want and practice whatever they want and not have to be tied down to an institution such as a church ect. it's the institutions that ruin religion. h0neanias 13,516
In short? Yes, obviously. Don't forget that almost every major religion started as a sect or a small cult; the only difference is scale. If we talk generally, however, then sect is subsumed under religion (as a social, psychological, and epistemological phenomenon).

Gloupipoo 1,619
ok here's a few discussion questions how do you understand the term "sect" how do you understand the term "religion" why do you believe that the existence of a "sect" is inherently problematic Sect: MWD 1a : a dissenting or schismatic religious body; especially : one regarded as extreme or hereticalb : a religious denomination 2archaic : sex 1 <so is all her sect — Shakespeare> 3a : a group adhering to a distinctive doctrine or to a leader TS 1. a body of persons adhering to a particular religious faith; a religious denomination. 2.a group regarded as heretical or as deviating from a generally acceptedreligious tradition. 3.(in the sociology of religion) a Christian denomination characterized byinsistence on strict qualifications for membership, as distinguishedfrom the more inclusive groups called churches. 4.any group, party, or faction united by a specific doctrine or under adoctrinal leader. Religion: MWD Full Definition of religion 1a : the state of a religious <a nun in her 20th year of religion>b (1) : the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2) : commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance 2: a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices 3archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness 4: a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith TS 1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs. 2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreedupon by a number of persons or sects:the Christian religion; the Buddhist religion. 3. the body of persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs andpractices:a world council of religions. 4. the life or state of a monk, nun, etc.:to enter religion. 5.the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith. 6.something one believes in and follows devotedly; a point or matter of ethics or conscience: 3. Sects are often seen as bad. e.g. Islam can be "interpreted" as condemning sects (they're haram) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeFgrO8CeNE Other sects can be seen as problematic e.g. Jehovah's witnesses cannot transfuse blood and some children died because of their parents' faith, they are forced to engage in public preaching and evangelism as they are under biblical command, etc. e.g. #2: scientology is a scam, infiltrated the US govt, online censorship, physical violence towards its members, harrassment towards "enemies of the Church", list goes on. Some sects are derived from existing religions, but then again Christianity is derived from Judaism so...
