Other sects can be seen as problematic 

 

e.g. Jehovah's witnesses cannot transfuse blood and some children died because of their parents' faith, they are forced to engage in public preaching and evangelism as they are under biblical command, etc. 

 

e.g. #2: scientology is a scam, infiltrated the US govt, online censorship, physical violence towards its members, harrassment towards "enemies of the Church", list goes on.

In short? Yes, obviously. Don't forget that almost every major religion started as a sect or a small cult; the only difference is scale. If we talk generally, however, then sect is subsumed under religion (as a social, psychological, and epistemological phenomenon).

 

I strongly agree with this. The only difference is scale. 

 

Some sects are derived from existing religions, but then again Christianity is derived from Judaism so...
