do you think kpop needs a faster turnover rate?

do older kpop groups need to start retiring/disbanding faster like they did in the old days to keep the industry more balanced?

now, we've had this "the kpop industry is oversturated and overpopulated" conversation a billion times. too many groups are debuting and that's a fact, but would more groups have a chance at success if the older groups would just.... leave?

back before our current top tier groups debuted, most popular older groups were disbanding every 5 years so it left a huge gap in the industry for big bang and snsd to slide into when it was their time. but these days the most popular older groups are forming an immovable wall and everything behind them is getting stopped up.  the groups at the bottom are barely seeing the light of day.

like, unless we get another group that gets super popular in china  like exo did, we're not going to see any of our middle tier to bottom tier favs reach anywhere near that high in a VERY long time.

opinions?

It does seem very overpopulated but it doesn't make much sense for the older more established groups to disband if they make much more money than the newer groups

Yeah im tired of seeing half assed performances from snsd, big bang and ....whatever super junior does on stage.

I don't mind their legacy living on the groups still deserve respect for all that they've done in the kpop scene but I hope the members focus more on their own solo work because their current music and performances are....yikes

I dont think the older groups should disband just to make room for the younger groups, If the younger groups want to rise they will have to work harder, I dont think the older groups should stop if they are still slaying left and right and in some cases getting even bigger.  Groups like SNSD, SJ and BB had to earn their spots and younger groups have to do the same.  Its not their fault their popular

well, my point isn't that big groups should just suddenly stop promoting for no reason. i just mean that i think the industry needs to open up more and you either have to blow out the bottom or the top to do that. for example with all the solo activities big bang has going, you'd think the members might be tired of doing the idol thing, you know? honestly in 2013, i thought hey were going to disband any day. but they proved me wrong, huh.

No... They're musicians and especially for those who produce their own stuff I want them to last as long as possible. (as a group or solo) Like I get there are some idols who only uses their idol tag to become actors, variety stars etc not that it's wrong but why would someone who is passionate about music should stop?

I get your point but business wise it makes no sense for them to disband now, their MADE tour is massive and its not even over and they already made YG more then 200 million just this year as for SM their moneymakers are still TVXQ, SJ and SNSD now recently EXO is stepping up but its not enough to cover for the other 3.  Its tough on the new groups for sure but the seniors have strong fandoms and in BB's case seem to be getting more popular every comeback so disbanding is not likely anytime soon

I feel like some members in the older groups stay with the company for so long they don't have a life outside of the company. They do make more money but I kind of don't see a point of making more money then you already need  if you don't have anything to pass it onto or share it with.

Kpop already has one of the fastest turnover rates compared to almost every other music industry. Compare it to USA where songs stay at #1 for 5-10+ weeks at a time, or China where song may dominate the charts for literal years, or Japan where older acts that have been around for 10-20+ years have been dominant (aka johnny's).

There are very very very few exceptions of a successful group staying at the top for 5 plus years. I can't even name 5 acts besides bb and snsd that have done that. There are continuous rookies and new songs and new trends that happen in kpop every year. I think as kpop fans we're just used to so much new stuff and fluff even though there are constant new releases and hit songs every week or so and we consider a week a "long time".

So no, kpop doesn't need faster turnover rate imo So many new groups are already replacing old ones excluding the 0.01% of the top groups (Exid, AOA, Gfriend, BTS, Vixx, Got7, Twice, day6, ikon, winner, red velvet, mamamoo, lovelyz, etc etc etc etc) I don't know how satisfied you want to be when  99% of popular groups have already "turned over" and are giving way to a new generation of idols, it's like you want a new rookie group every week (which literally happens...)

You know who doesn't ask this? Any of the other music industries.

Like I don't understand this at all.

Tiger JK and Yoon Mirae have been in the industry since 1995

Epik High since 2001

Verbal Jint since 1997

Seo Taiji since 1994

Madonna since the 80s

Arashi since the 90s

Beyonce since the 90s

Jolin Tsai since 1998

G.O.D. since 1998

One Ok Rock from 2005

SG Wannabe since 2004

Nobody asking any of them to pack their shit up. This idea that a turnover rate is a necessity is ridiculous fallacy. Groups and artists will rise and fall and the need for some groups to just call it a quits cause it's "hard" for rookies is just a selfish pity party.

The K-music industry is fucked up anyway, because it's mostly focused on k-pop and idols only, there's no balance at all. And even if old established groups disbanded, the market will still be oversaturated, I mean did you know that over 90 new K-pop groups debuted in 2015 only?
