Australia: Continent or Country?

It depends if you are from a English speaking country or not tho.

When I was in elementary school (in the 90s  ) they taught us that there are 7 continents and that Australia is part of the Oceania continent so to me it's a country but it makes up pretty much all of the Oceania continent too

i live in Autralia and at school we are told it's both

At least definitely a country, own government, flag, UN recognises it as a country and so on.

 

As for a continent, I've been taught it's not a continent on its own but it forms a continent called Oceania comprising of close by islands like new Zealand, Fiji etc. Sounds kinda silly but you can also say the same thing of how Europe and Asia are different even though they are part of one continuous mega land mass.
