Yezi “Diss battle atmosphere? Of course it was tenseâ€

Translated by fiestarintl

Mid to half way through the program Yezi’s appeal became apparent. She gained approval from the other rappers, and the participating producers gave her performances the thumbs up. After this point, everyone thought Yezi was a candidate to win, but she was eliminated before the semi-final. However, she won the loser’s revival and was brought back to participate in the semi-final.

We were curious. We asked how much she wanted to win, how she felt when she heard there was a loser’s revival, and what raper she sees as her rival. Yezi’s personal take on the atmosphere of the show and the relationships between the rappers was also interesting.

Q: Is there a rapper you think of as a rival?

A: I think this (kind of thing) is up to the individual. I’m the kind of person that can’t focus if I think too much. So I try not to think (about it) at all. I never thought about who or isn’t my rival. I was only thinking about how I can make my performance as good as possible.

Q: You were eliminated on the show and then brought back with the losers’ revival..

A: I didn’t even think there would be anything like a loser’s revival. When I was eliminated, it was because I had messed up, so I didn’t feel like it was unfair. Sua’s rap was really touching and well done. I still think eliminating me was the right choice.

Q: Was the diss battle that tense in real life?

A: Of course it was tense. That’s because the point was to diss each other. It was the kind of atmosphere where you can’t just thoughtlessly say things to anyone. But it wasn’t like anyone made it that way, it just naturally came out like that. Everyone’s beat and diss was different, so I think everyone was just focused on making sure they won. A mission is just a mission after all.

Q: But you totally tore Sua to shreds..

A: Sua will hold this against me. Haha. I can empathize with Sua’s life as a trainee, because I was in the same position when I was younger. The diss battle was like an unnie-dongsaeng chat. Those are just things I wanted to tell her. I did the diss battle with Sua and I’m originally close with her, so that made me feel like I had to come harder. I don’t have any harsh feelings towards Sua. We even kept going on teams together after that.

Q: It seems like you’re all close in real life.

A: We all get along well. I hang out with Gilme unnie, KittiB and Soomin often. I put out a mixtape recently with Yubin unnie. We all went through the same things. We all had a hard time writing lyrics, we all went without food. We understand each other.

Q: Is there a particular performance you remember the most?

A: The semi-final performance stuck with me most. The 8 of us were to prepare a stage that showed the “real me,†so I think that was the coolest and most properly done performance I did.

Q: It’s a fact that you’re receiving a lot of attention after “Unpretty 2″. I’m sure you’re not upset about it.

A: Watching “Unpretty 2″ from the viewer’s perspective, I saw a side of myself I didn’t know existed. I learned that I have a fighting spirit and I’m good at weighing pros and cons. The only downside is not being able to fix the mistakes I made. I think it was a positive opportunity rather than something to be upset about.

Q: Do you feel any regret about not being able to win?

A: It was never my goal to win in the first place. It would’ve been nice if I did, but what I wanted was to test my own limits and gain recognition. Honestly there was never a point when I was watching the show that I thought “I’m doing wellâ€. My thoughts are that I’ve always been good. My focus was not being ashamed or regretting my performance. I have no regrets or shame.
