CUBE Update I (16.04.15)

On March 10, I posted about CUBE being in the process of finding a local partner in China to open up an Academy under a franchised/licesnsed agreement. There was some doubt over whether it would be a JV like the their competitors in YG, or a venture controlled entirely by HQ like SM.

It does seem like they’ve finalised what they want and are going with the franchise/license route, which gives them first dibs at the graduating trainees and also claims royalties from revenue earned, all while having no real financial risk if the Academy goes under.

In addition to that, it seems like they’re feeling the pressure as competitors are stepping up movements in China, all while some are still planning on maintaining their market shares in Japan. It should be noted that only 17% of CUBE’s revenue comes from Japan which is definitely under-performance given their circumstances.

With that in mind, it should come as no shock that CUBE have shuffled their schedules a little for the remainder of the year, with the ever-reliable BEAST being the core of Japanese promotions, and putting forward their most valuable IPs in BEAST and 4minute to take a crack at China.

They also plan to scale down spending on CLC after June. It’s standard practice since groups are generally cost-heavy in the initial parts of their life cycle but the timing is interesting.

As of today, it’s been two days of the group’s album promotion in Japan, traditionally a market for rookies to take take a gamble to try to advantage of differences in living costs between there and Korea to turn a quick profit with pre-existing discography. I wonder if CUBE are going to be watching how things go in Japan to decide how much the scale back investment in the group.

Note on Pentagon: not a lot of information available but there are many in the company that feel like CUBE are being too aggressive with investing in new acts as opposed to consolidating what they have, since they are apparently not maximising the full potential of their existing roster.

They’re studying potential comeback date windows for the next eighteen months but they want to get the boys out of the gate as soon as possible. In the upper circles of management, they’re telling staff that not getting a Pentagon debut within 2016 should be considered a failure, so the pressure’s on to get the boys ready and find the right timing slot.

This could be nothing at all but one does have to question why CUBE are continuing to rush. Is it a matter of simple and consistent incompetence, or is there something else more serious beneath the surface?

It’s something I’ll be keeping in mind going forward.

Obviously they MUST debut Pentagon this year coz the group's main vocalists happen to be the oldest in the group are not getting any younger, namely Jinho and Hwitaek - both are considered old as far as debut ages go (24 & 25 korean age if I'm not mistaken). Pretty sure both are gonna play a big part in the group. Then their next strong vocalist is 23, namely Hongseok then their possible main rapper Hyojong is also the same age. They need to debut this year or else all the cost they've put into them will also be considered a loss. I think Pentagon has a potential to be one of the successful rookies IF cube plays their cards right and give them a good promotion/song/concept which they've been really BAD at this past couple years so I'm not really gonna depend much on that... but oh well.

Yeah they're definitely not updating on trainee's birthdays like last month but people need to chill out. They're all raging on the last about the Sewol Ferry and forget that just the fact that this is already progress for Cube compared to the past when they would keep their trainees hidden for the most part.

idk why they are behaving like that, it's honestly embarrassing and insensitive.
