  • BTS shoots at Ilbe in “Ma Cityâ€

As all of you know, BTS came out with their new album “The most beautiful moment in life pt.2″. BTS is known to make songs targeting problems in Korean society. Their song “ ë±ìƒˆâ€ is about the younger generation’s struggle due to the older generation. In the song “Ma Cityâ€, BTS makes a shot at Ilbe. Ilbe is a online community that targets Korean minorites and is labeled as far right. Recently, a member of Ilbe made headlines when mocking the sinking of the Sewol Ferry sinking by eating a fishcake, making the Ilbe hand sign, wearing Danwon high school uniform and captioning that they were eating their friends. Ilbe is even a terrorist organization, one teen member set off a homemade bomb during a discussion event lead by a leftist Korean American author.

Ilbe usually targets women and people of Jeolla origin. BTS member J-Hope is from Gwanju, which was the capital of the South Jeolla province until 2005. During J-Hope’s rap in “Ma City†the lyrics say:

I’m a South Jeolla Gwangju baby

when my footsteps take me to a mountain it’s to the summit of Mudeungsan, baby

my life is hot, the fever of the south, fight fire with fire, there’s no giving up on the law

I put it in gear and and kick-start, bounce like crazy

with only dance, I had this dream of being a singer

to have that reality and jump onstageI tried, I was full of passion

I’m Gwangju’s hoshik, the nation’s eight provinces are overgrown

if you want to see me, meet at 7, muster

everybody press it, 062-581

According to my friend who lives in North Jeolla province this lyrics have a significant meaning.

“Because ILBE really hate Jeolla Gwangju. and to me, even the name of Gwangju feels sad. because many Gwangju citizens did democratic movement against Military dictatorship government and so much people were killed by soldiers. But the members of ILBE insist that it was just rebellion planed by North Korea as the dictatorship government said in their media.and the “7†is used usually when ILBE point at Gwangju city. Also 062 is Gwangju’s local phone number, and 518 is May 18 when the democratic movement happened.â€

To summarize, Ilbe discriminates against people of Jeolla origin. In 1980, peaceful protests against the military government of Chu Doo-Hwan turned violent when the protesters were suppressed by military forces. The protesters then raided armories to stand up for themselves. Several hundred protesters died. Ilbe considers this uprising as pro-North Korean. Ilbe IS a terrorist organization in Korea that targets minorites and leftists.

So remember this when listening to ‘ma City’. Also, be proud that J-Hope and the rest of Bangtan are willing to be so political and fire shots against a terrorist organization in Korea that has created so much emotional and physical harm. This is Bangtan Style.

*EDIT*
