[Discussion] The Chinese & Korean Entertainment Culture

Warning: There's some length to this post.

Relatively, I'm actually quiet a newbie to the Chinese entertainment side but I have been really diving into it recently. And one of the first things I noticed is almost the polar opposite cultures (taboo's, mannerism etc.) that the Chinese and Koreans have (as projected in their entertainment projects). Since I pretty much have been more invested in the Korean side of things, that sense of comparison came naturally.

The Chinese are for one much more lax in their variety shows, If I was to take the Korean lens and watch their shows through it, I would be able to draft out a handful of scandalous news reports for the early bird k-keyboard warriors. Their on variety skinship is natural and not a lot of meaning is given to it unless implied. They seem to also regard crude humor in a much lighter manner.

There is also the dating culture, I think there is a whole philosophy for celebrities to actually positively capitalize off their public relationships, it's almost welcomed and celebrated at a grand level. Generally, rather than backlash or loss of interest you can actually receive quiet the opposite, a bigger spotlight and a following that is dedicated to just that aspect of your public life, your relationship with your partner. No one is going to pop up and tell you "your dating beautifully" by being oblivious to your partner even after going public but rather it comes off as something odd (unless your notoriously known as a private persona).

Another thing I'm curious about is also the matter of gender and infantilizing women in the entertainment industry, I'm not at all sure in this aspect but is the concept of innocence and arousing "protective instincts" a popular notion in the Chinese entertainment industry as it is in the Korean one. What about the impression of strength and independence in their entertainment female figures?

These seem to be the superficial notions that hit you when you get your foot through the door while carrying the perspectives of the room before with you. More so, I guess I wanted to know if there is truth to these notions or when you dive deeper "it's all the same don't let it fool you" ... Also perhaps opinions about the general culture overall in these countries and how it reflects in their entertainment industry (realizing of course that just because they are grouped under the umbrella of Asia, they are still two different, distinct countries with their own culture).

1) you know...the fact that Chinese shows are "bolder" doesn't mean more that they're more lax. It just goes to show that they have to be more extreme to get viewerships because the industry isn't controlled like the korean industry. There's so many variety programmes and they have to be more competitive. The nature of their variety show might be different but it's not necessarily a good thing. So what if they're more blunt or do more skinship on variety shows? Isn't that another kind of stress for people if they are working with people they aren't close with or they are more conservative people by nature?!

2) The dating culture applies to BOTH ent circles. Idols dating is not supported...be it K or C ent. If Fahrenheit had dating news during the height of their popularity, shit would've broke out similarly. And I get that there's been many dating news in C ent in the past year but people like Jay Chou, Show Luo, Aaron Kwok are long past their idol status and can release dating news at ease. (Btw some still get backlash...what capitalisation are you talking about?)

3) The concept of innocent girls is prevalent in ALL East Asian culture - korean, Chinese and Japanese. The Chinese are just quieter and more subtle about this. I guess not many female celebs have been outright promoted in this manner whereas in Korea many female stars are blatantly promoted as "symbol of innocence".

^I agree with this.
