Are Boy Groups Disposable?

Recommended Posts

We always talk about which GGs have fallen from grace (T-ara, Every JYP GG, KARA). Even though I have a very high opinion of those groups and their material, I do admit that they are not the powers they used to be.

But why don't we ever talk about how soooooo many boy groups appear, and then fade into irrelevancy?

MBLAQ

BEAST

BAP

Boyfriend

Teen Top

B1A4

U-Kiss

Super Junior

2pm

SHINee (to a much much much less extent than the others)

And then there are the newer, fresher groups who seem to take over the scene completely

EXO

BTS

17

Monsta X

(and the countless others....!)

Are fangirls quicker to jump ship than fanboys?

Where is the longevity?

But boy groups tend to have a more stable fanbase than ggs

If ggs flop with the public then it's over (unless u r snsd, 2ne1, apink etc) but for boy groups they can still keep going and milk their fans

suju makes tons of $$$ from tours even though the public doesn't care about them anymore

B2ST's comeback was a messy nonevent, Teen Top was a serious underpeformance, 2pm's My House era was a disaster, Married To The Music can hardly be called a success, and we're not even going to get into whatever that was SJ tried to do this year.

You were saying?

But we're talking about their 2015 stats in comparison to just three years ago, in 2012 when they were easily one of THE top groups.

And now people are debating on whether they're even mid-tier.

What happened?

Haters are debating... Why do you think even after 7 years, the name SHINee still has a bigger impact than most groups these days even after you said they are 'Fading into relevancy'... They are still the vocal of most experts in music. Loved by the public even non-fans... And not just the group but as individual artists too. If that's fading into relevancy to you, I don't know what to say with the other groups  :dave:

it was a repackage with barely any promotion i mean aside from a few music performances they sold just short of 90k copies with one version alone, the digitals were underwhelming especially compared to View but sans promotion what could we expect? that being said MTTM got 100k+ downloads in its first week which is more than 90% of boygroups in theirs lmao and all of this doesn't take away from Odd's success which I cba to go into detail about

over 7 years in the scene and they're still doing well even after a few group hiatuses mind you

Yeah, because people debate whether they're either considered second-tier or top-tier, not lower lol.

SHINee is one of my favorite BGs, lets NOT get into calling me a hater because I can clearly see they are in decline.

You seemed to have ignored the whole point of my post, though.

Why are they (and other BGs) slipping through the cracks so easily when rookie groups come out and take them over with ease?

Which 'rookie' group has overtaken Shinee? Generally curious btw.

edit: I do agree that many of the big groups are losing stamina, but I do not think todays rookies can fill their shoes just yet. And what I mean by fill their shoes is match them when it comes to general public relevancy, fandom size, overall revenue, cf deals, stability, digitals, album sales, concerts etc. Some of todays rookies can beat out the more established groups, especially when talking digitals, or in some cases even album sales, however there are still many elements that have not been reached yet.

Because those BGs you are saying are the trend these days... They mostly got the newly joined kpoppers. Whereas the groups you say that are fading into relevancy already have solid fandoms. I don't know about the others but  I'm pretty sure SuJu, 2pm and SHINee has pretty solid fandoms right now. Their names wouldn't fade into relevancy like you are saying even if many new idols began to trend. It's been awhile since boyfriend appeared in kpop since they got shipped off to Japan so i don't really know the status of their fans right now.

Also seeing some of the new groups you mentioned, it seems like you are only looking at one place. They are not as relevant in Korea as they may seem to int fans.... But again, that's none of my business

I'm not comparing those boy groups to SHINee, 2pm, and SuJu to make those groups look like failures.

I'm comparing them to make you realize how easy it is for BGs to fade out of the public eye  :derp:

And you just agreed with me, correct? They're trends, right?

EXO and BTS have overtaken SHINee.

Why do you keep on bringing up Shinee in comparison to the new groups when I simply said Boy Groups in general fall out of fashion easily?

Could those just be your own insecurities about your own group?
