Frequently Asked Questions
During each new promotion cycle, the same (or similar) questions tend to pop up. So, we decided to put together one massive Frequently (or not so frequently) Asked Questions post. In the interest of organization, I've separated them into categories and hidden under spoiler tags. Unspoiler at your own reading peril as this is pretty comprehensive (read: long). If your question is not answered here, feel free to ask it! But remind yourself – 'is this a simple google away?'
For example, if your question is “how much did BTS sell?” Check the first post. Minsoo has cumulative figures on physical sales and downloads separated by year or month for the current year.
Korean Charts
Spoiler
Hanteo Chart
1.What is Hanteo?
Hanteo is an album chart which is updated in real time/daily. Stores that are Hanteo Certified enter sales made (it's an automated system) to customers during the day, and full data is made available to people with Hanteo subscriptions. While most stores in Korea are Hanteo certified, many are not. Retailers who sell Korean albums outside of Korea are even less likely to be Hanteo certified. However, Hanteo has clarified that sales made and exported abroad are counted on Hanteo chart. They have also indicated that some retailers have used the Hanteo logo in the past to misrepresent that they are a Hanteo certified store. Regardless, stores that are not Hanteo certified do not reflect on this chart. This often leads to groups with a large international fanbase having a much higher number of albums on Gaon not reflect on Hanteo because they are sold by retailers who are not Hanteo certified.
2.How do you all know how much the album sold on Hanteo every day if it’s not publicly available?
Kind users over on Baidu will update sales at various intervals. There are baidu threads specific to each release as well as a mega-Hanteo baidu thread. The current link for Hanteo and other sales data for Love Yourself: Tear is located here. Note that the official Hanteo thread on OneHallyu also has links to different baidu posts. As an aside, beginning 2019, Hanteo will (allegedly) make this information public.
3.Why does Hanteo matter?
The Hanteo chart is used to measure physical sales for music show wins because it is available daily whereas Gaon is only available monthly. So, if you see BTS with a physical album score on Music Bank, it came from Hanteo figures.
Gaon Chart
4.What is Gaon?
Gaon is the major comprehensive, official chart in Korea. It provides data on both physical and digital sales as well as fun things like karaoke ranking. It measures sales from Sunday - Saturday for weekly charts.
5.When is Gaon updated?
Gaon is updated in two ways: weekly and monthly. Weekly updates are posted to the Gaon website every Thursday at 11am KST. Weekly updates will give digital index figures. It will also provide rankings of physical album sales, digital downloads, and digital streams, but it will not provide numbers. Gaon also updates the chart with monthly figures. This is where the number of physical albums is posted (note that as of 2018 Gaon no longer releases download or stream data at all). It is shared on the Gaon website the first Thursday of the following month at 11am KST. That being said, Gaon will occasionally delay for all kinds of reasons or post information late. Also, if the first Thursday of the next month falls too early in the month, it may get pushed back to the following Thursday.
6.OK, so Hanteo is real sales and Gaon isn't, right? That's what people on OneHallyu keep telling me. So, which is the best estimate of sales?
Wrong. Hanteo and Gaon are two different charts that measure two different things. Hanteo measures sales to customers daily but only in Hanteo certified stores. Gaon measures the albums which are purchased by and shipped to retailers for sale from the distributor. Unlike Hanteo, Gaon will adjust the sales of an album at the half year and end of year mark to correct for returned/unsold albums or additional purchases not captured in the monthly charts. Also, the totality of Hanteo’s figures are included within the Gaon value. As such, Gaon is a more accurate estimate of overall sales. Additionally, since Gaon corrects for unsold albums, an album charting on Gaon in small values over time shows that there is a continued demand for stock.
Miscellaneous/Other Chart Questions
7.What is an All-kill? Certified All-kill? Perfect All-kill?
An “all-kill” is when a song is #1 on the major music sites monitored on the iChart in real time. Here is Spring Day with an all-kill. A Certified All-Kill (CAK) is when a song is #1 on the both the real-time and the daily charts. Here is Fake Love with a CAK. A Perfect All-Kill (PAK) is when a song is #1 in real-time, daily, AND the weekly iChart. Here is Fake Love with a PAK.
8.What is/where is the iChart?
The iChart aggregates daily and real-time rankings of the major music sites in Korea. If you mouse over the chart, it will link you to the specific chart on the website of all the respective providers. It is located here.
9.What does the pre-order number measure, and where will I see it reflected?
Pre-order is a number reported to the media and is not reflected on a chart right away. It indicates the number of albums which retailers have requested from the distributor and is self-reported. This number is based on retailers’ research, customer pre-orders, and buying trends to determine how many copies of the album are necessary to meet customer demand. If there is more demand than expected, stores will place additional orders. The pre-order number will eventually be reflected on the Gaon chart indicating copies sent to retailers for sale. Gaon figures in subsequent months will show continued demand for the album.
Non-Korean Charts (aka Billboard inside)
Spoiler
10.What is Billboard, and when does it update?
Billboard is the official chart of the United States, Canada, and several other countries. The questions below will be specific to the United States. This chart measures sales and streams from Friday - Thursday and radio play from Monday-Sunday and updates every Tuesday morning. The time varies, but it's generally completed by 11am EST at the latest. If there is a holiday, the charts are pushed back one day. The top 10 albums on the BB200 are published in an article the Sunday before, and the top 10 on the Hot 100 are published in an article the Monday before.
11.What is the difference between the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200? How are these measured?
The Hot 100 is a chart for singles, and the Billboard 200 is a chart for albums. The Hot 100 combines song sales (via downloads), streams, and radio play. The BB200 combines album sales (both physical and digital), track equivalent album sales (10 purchases of individual tracks = 1 album), and streaming equivalent album sales (1250 paid streams = 1 album; 3750 free streams = 1 album). Streams from most on demand services are counted: Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music Unlimited, Tidal, Google Play, etc. YouTube views currently apply to the Hot 100 (and for RIAA certification) but not the BB200. Streams from programmed music streaming services such as Pandora, Google Radio, Napster, and AOL Radio count towards Billboard streaming numbers but are weighted at a lower value than the On Demand streaming services. Streams made from pay platforms have heavier weight. For example, Spotify Premium streams will be worth more than free Spotify streams.
12.So, how should I buy my stuff on iTunes to best support BTS?
In an ideal world where you are rich, buy each track individually and then buy the entire album (either with the same account resulting in multiple copies of the song or with two separate iTunes accounts). Or buy the album on whatever platform you want it on and then buy the single on another (i.e. album on iTunes and just the title track on Amazon or Google Play). If you are buying on iTunes, do not buy the title track and “complete” your album. Doing this will just count as an album sale as the original single will count as a return meaning it will NOT count for the Hot 100.
13.Great. I'm gonna gift the title track to all of my friends. That counts, right?
Nope. We recently learned that songs gifted to someone else are not reported to Nielsen. If you want to give it to a friend, send them an iTunes gift card so they can purchase it themselves. Or tell them to buy it and give them cold, hard cash =)
14.So, do album sales on Billboard and places like Oricon (Japanese charts) register on Hanteo?
It depends! Some vendors do report to both. BigHit confirmed that Amazon sales will count on both Billboard and Hanteo. And UMG confirmed that sales of Love Yourself: Her sold by UMG will count for both Oricon and Hanteo. As such, you shouldn't combine Oricon with Hanteo to get 'total sales' since you will likely be double counting purchases.
This chart is an aggregate of several national charts. While the numbers look great on paper, they combine physical and digital sales. They also add numbers which may reflect on multiple charts (i.e. Hanteo added to Oricon figures). As such, it's not the most accurate measure of sales. So, we'd prefer to look to Gaon for total physical sales.
16.Are physical albums sold in the US via retailers like Amazon, Target, and Best Buy included in Gaon and Hanteo as well as Billboard figures? If so, when are the sales added to Hanteo?
The only retailer that BigHit confirmed will count for both Billboard and Hanteo is Amazon. That being said, we have no way of knowing when the actual sales are registered with Hanteo. We know that The Orchard, a Sony Music subsidiary, is distributing the album as a domestic release to other US retailers as well, but BigHit has not confirmed which charts these sales will count toward or which specific retailers are being supplied by The Orchard.
17.People keep talking about BB200 and Hot 100 predictions. Where are these coming from?
Hits Daily Double provides estimates for the BB200 updated throughout the week for the top 50 albums. A user on ATRL is known for making Hot 100 estimates. However, this information is not centralized. Once you navigate to the charts forum, click on the most recent thread about the Hot 100 and give it a read til you find someone making a prediction.
Korean End of Year Award Shows
Spoiler
18. What are the Korean award shows with Daesangs? I heard daesangs are all the rage.
Korea has a ton of year end award shows with daesangs. They are: Melon Music Awards (MMA), Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), Seoul Music Awards (SMA), Golden Disc Awards (GDA), and the Korean Music Awards (KMA). These are the major award shows. Over the past couple of years, new award shows with Daesangs have popped up: Asia Artist Awards (AAA), the Soribada Best K-Music Awards, and the MBC Plus x Genie Music Awards (MGA).
19.What are the criteria for daesangs from each of those award shows, and has BTS won any?
Is this where Internal Data comes from? - Yes. Melon is purposely not transparent about how the digital score is determined. Based on customer service calls, it seems to be based on a variety of factors including downloads, streams, unique listeners, longevity, and things like streaming behavior (i.e. does it chart high when it's released then disappear when promotions are over). Melon purposely does not make this information publicly available nor provide protected business data on customers and listening patterns to prevent fandom manipulation.
BTS won Album of the Year from MMA in 2016 for HYYH: Young Forever. (1)
BTS won Song of the Year from MMA in 2017 for Spring Day off of You Never Walk Alone. (1)
BTS won Album of the Year and Artist of the Year from MMA in 2018. (2)
MNET Asian Music Awards – MAMA has four daesangs, and you can participate in the vote on their website.
Song of the Year: 20% online vote, 40% expert judges, 30% music sales, 10% record sales
Album of the Year: 40% expert judges, 60% record sales
Artist of the Year: 30% online vote, 30% expert judges, 30% music sales, 10% record sales
NEW 2018 - Worldwide Icon of the Year: 60% online vote, 20% social media voting, 20% MV views
BTS won Artist of the Year from MAMA in 2016. (1)
BTS won Artist of the Year from MAMA in 2017. (1)
BTS won Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Worldwide Icon of the Year from MAMA in 2018. (3)
Seoul Music Awards – SMA has only one daesang for Artist of the Year. It is awarded to the best among the twelve Bonsang recipients by calculating both cumulative physical and digital sales. The breakdown is: 30% vote, 40% digital and physical sales released from the calendar year, and 30% judges score.
1. BTS won Artist of the Year in 2018. (1)
2. BTS won Artist of the Year in 2019. (1)
Golden Disc Awards – GDA has only two daesangs. The criteria is the same: 80% sales and 20% Evaluation Panel.
Disc Daesang/Album of the Year – Goes to the best album (full length or mini) from the Album division nominees.
Digital Daesang/Song of the Year – Goes to the best single from Digital song division nominees.
BTS won the Disc Daesang/Album of the Year in 2018. (1)
BTS won the Disc Daesang/Album of the Year in 2019. (1)
Korean Music Awards – KMA has three daesangs: Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Musician of the Year. These are determined 100% through the vote of a panel of judges and infrequently (but occasionally) awards to idol groups.
1. BTS was named Musician of the Year in 2018 and became the first idol group to ever receive this honor. (1)
Asia Artist Awards – AAA has one daesang for Music. To be 100% honest, I have no idea what the criteria is. It's not on their Wikipedia or their website that I can find. However, voting is a component of... something. Definitely the popularity awards but perhaps something else. Ah, the struggle of being a disorganized, young award show.
1. BTS won the Music Daesang in 2018. (1)
Soribada Best K-Music Awards – Soribada held its first ever award show in 2017 and apparently hands out a daesang now, too. Criteria include internal data (Soribada streaming/DLs, etc), online mobile votes, and ratings from professional judges and critics.
1. BTS won a Daesang in 2018. (1)
MBC Plus X Genie Music Awards - New in 2018. MGA has four daesangs: Artist of the Year (30% vote, 30% Genie Music digital song score, 20% Judge Panel, 20% Social Media), Song of the Year (20% vote, 40% Genie Music digital song score, 20% Judge Panel, 20% Social Media), Best Selling Artist of the Year (10% vote, 50% Genie Musical digital song score, 20% Judge Panel, 20% Social Media), and Digital Album of the Year (10% vote, 50% Genie Musical digital song score, 20% Judge Panel, 20% Social Media).
1. BTS won Artist of the Year and Digital Album of the Year from MGA in 2018 (2).
Korean Popular Music Awards - New in 2018. This award show claims to be the "Korean Grammys" as it weighs judging heavily. However, it also still uses heavy fandom vote. So... anyway, they allegedly have three daesangs. I say allegedly because the website does not actually say which award is a daesang, and even in announcing them it was just "상". However, given that they handed out 본상, an intuitive leap was made and news outlets reported these as daesangs: Artist of the Year (10% Gaon charting, 20% fan vote, 30% musician vote, 40% judge's vote), Song of the Year (10% Gaon charting, 20% fan vote, 30% musician vote, 40% judge's vote), and Album of the Year (10% Gaon charting, 20% fan vote, 30% musician vote, 40% judge's vote).
1. BTS won Album of the Year from KPMA in 2018 (1).
20. So how many Daesangs is that?
Nineteen.
21.Are there any other award shows people seem to care about?
The other major award show is the Gaon Chart Awards. This award show issues two basic awards: A digital award for every month of the year and an award for the best selling album of each quarter. The digital award is based on digital scoring for the first 30 days after release of a song no matter when it falls within the month. The quarter awards are based on album sales for the six weeks that follow album release.
22.Wow. That’s an absurd amount of award shows with a ton of different criteria. One final question - when you say “sales of an album”, does this mean just a single album? or multiple versions? repacks?
As far as we know, all of the Korean Award shows combine sales of a main album (and any additional version thereof) with a repackage (if one was produced during the award show eligibility period). None of this is explicitly stated pretty much anywhere, but it’s a logical conclusion based on how awards have been given out in the past. The only award show that definitely does not combine alternate versions and repackages is the Gaon Chart Awards.
23.What chart do all these award shows use to determine sales?
Other than the award shows for specific digital platforms (MMA and Soribada), all other award shows use Gaon figures for awards – both physical and digital.
Korean Music Shows
Spoiler
24.Which Korean Music Shows hand out awards, and how are they decided?
The Show – 40% digital, 20% music video views, 15% expert opinion, 10% album sales, and 15% live voting
M Countdown – 45% Digital Single Sales, 15% Album Sales, 20% Social Media Points (Youtube views and SNS buzz), 10% Global Fan Votes, and 10% MNet Broadcoast Points.
Music Bank – 65% digital music charts, 5% album sales (however there is no cap on this figure. Although 5% seems small, it's often a big component of BTS' score), 20% broadcast time on KBS, 10% Viewers Choice Charts.
Show Champion – 45% digital sales (Melon), 10% physical sales (Hanteo), 15% ranking from netizens, 15% ranking from professionals, and 15% broadcast.
Music Core – The criteria is: 60% physical album and digital sales, 10% viewers committee pre-vote, 10% Music Video views, 5% MBC Radio Broadcast, 15% audience live voting.
Inkigayo – 55% digital single sales, 35% SNS (YouTube views), 5% album sales, 5% pre-vote, and 10% on-air. This show is often the hardest to win on due to digital scores making up a higher percentage.
25.So, how do I help BTS win on music shows?
If you have a Korean music subscription (i.e. Melon, Naver, MNET, Soribada, etc), stream and download. Watch the music video on YouTube. For programs with voting open globally (and not just in Korea), vote!
26.If a show isn't broadcasting for whatever reason, does someone still win?
It depends on the show. Music Bank and Inkigayo will always release a winner even if the program does not air. The other shows will not. M Countdown sometimes has winners during special episodes or no episode, but this is not always the case.
27.What is a triple crown?
There are two definitions of triple crown. One is winning on the three major broadcast network shows (M Countdown, Music Core, and Inkigayo) during one promotion cycle. The second is the one most people are talking about when they discuss the achievement: winning on the same program three weeks in a row.
Whew. I think that's it. If any of the answers are unclear or you think one should be added feel free to send me a message or quote me in the thread. And remember: Google is your friend.
So this is just physical sales after the album came out, right?
When will preorders be counted?
From what I understand up until this point its all the sold copies, so the pre-orders should technically be there since a lot of albums chart before the Physical release date
From what I understand up until this point its all the sold copies, so the pre-orders should technically be there since a lot of albums chart before the Physical release date
Hmmm that's strange, because there was news that there were 150k+ pre-orders
I wonder if the sales will decline by a lot. pt1 sold very consistently. even now it does.
they collected a lot of fans during the break. there could be a huge surge in beginning and it'll fall off as the pre orders and initial purchases end?

waaaaay better than expected
I wonder if the sales will decline by a lot. pt1 sold very consistently. even now it does.
they collected a lot of fans during the break. there could be a huge surge in beginning and it'll fall off as the pre orders and initial purchases end?
There will have some fansigns as well, plus Meet&Greet. Which will also bring in some extra sales.
Don't know how much, maybe there won't be as many fansigns as it was for pt.1, since they are also busy with the Japanese concert, and the various year end award ceremonies.
I can maybe see them holding more fansigns during the follow-up promotions maybe they will have more time during that period.
But yeah, a lot of fans that got into them during INU or after are now buying now the albums at the beginning so the beginning sales are bigger now.
