Singaporeans petition to ban Adam Lambert from performing on their Countdown 2016 show because he's gay

Over 15,000 people have signed a petition trying to stop the US singer preventing him from performing at a scheduled New Year's Eve concert.

“This is absolute atrocity! Our beloved nation must not be contaminated by such filth!†writes one angry supporter of the proposed ban.

What a difference a year makes.

UK audiences took the flamboyant performer to their hearts when he headlined the BBC's New Year's broadcast with Queen last year but he has been blasted with homophic and aggressive attacks elsewhere in the world.

Unfortunately, many citizens of Singapore do not feel the same way that the Brits do and have lobbied the concert promoters Mediacorps to cancel the US star's appearance in their city.

The petition states that Lambert is “hardly the kind of performer to send off our historic Jubilee year or to usher in the New Year.â€

One commentator makes her point particularly bluntly.

“Do not open our doors to gay performers,†writes Sally Chen.

It's a far cry from the warmth and love that the American Idol star is used to receiving from fans across Europe and America.

The petition argues that he should not be permitted to perform due to his "active promotion of a highly sexualised lifestyle and LGBT rights, both of which are contrary to mainstream Singaporean values."

The petition goes on to highlight previous times when Lambert “engaged in sexualised acts, including kissing a male band member on stage.â€

It also cites examples where his videos featured “female showgirls and male strippers performing acts of indecency.†

Reassuringly, not everyone in Singapore feels the same way.

"Can't believe there's a petition to remove @adamlambert from Singapore's countdown performance," tweeted one fan in Singapore. "It's so ridiculous."

And thousands more in the city feel the same way.

A counter-petition called 'We want Adam Lambert performing in Countdown 2016' has already atttacted MORE signatures than the original, despite being launched a day later.

"We the moral majority of Singapore utterly denounce and condemn the obvious sexual orientation discrimination demonstrated by the other petition on this site that is against Adam Lambert performing in Countdown 2016," the new petition states.

"Please allow Adam Lambert to perform in Countdown 2016 to demonstrate to the whole world that Singapore is a country that shuns discrimination and promotes diverse inclusive points of view.

"The opposing petition are anti family and anti Singaporean values because their discrimination harms family members. We support real family values and real Singaporean values by being modern and inclusive."

Other worldwide news sites such as BBC, Billboard and Reuters have reported on this news as well.

Well, guess which kind of people started the original petition.

Well to be fair didn't he make out with a backup dancer on stage and grope him.

That was years ago. The state television station of Singapore, Mediacorp have decided to keep Lambert as the performer, but has made sure his performance strictly adheres to broadcast regulations. If you watch his recent performances, he has stopped doing such overtly sexual stuff on stage long ago.

Well as long as he keeps the performances PG, the petition is rather stupid.

i didnt know singapore was so homophobic, was expecting that more from a country like malaysia

Singapore has always been not exactly a gay-friendly nation. The official government stance preaches the wholesomeness of the nuclear family unit, and gay sex is illegal. Though there have been a few events held in the nation in recent years such as Pink Dot to express support for LGBT rights, they still remain a vocal minority in Singapore though. I would say most of its citizens belong to the silent majority. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum you have the right wing pro-family conservatives/Christians.

Countries which have achieved exponential economic progress within a short period of time i.e Singapore and South Korea tend to have its society lag behind in terms of mindset and thinking, which is why they still remain largely traditional and conservative.

There is homophobic people everywhere. Singapore has large amount of vocal religious conservatives (Christian + Muslim) who hates lgbt while the rest population who is not religious conservative is largely apathetic to lgbt (read: neither support or hates)

Actually I remember reading about other events involving discrimination in Singapore...I guess it's all relative, but apparently they're fairly homophobic

It is just the vocal religious conservative (Christian + Muslim) while the rest population is largely apathetic to social issues that doesn't concern them.

well, the outspoken folks are the ones that vote and enact laws, so they matter. At the end of the day if there are a lot of people that don't care but still anti-sodomy laws, it's still not a great place to be queer.
