I just got accepted to uni recently. What to expect?

I just got accepted to a uni in Japan yesterday. My major will be Liberal Arts. Will there definitely be lots of papers, tests,... bla bla? And shall I take as many classes as I can during first year or not?

What else should I expect for campus life? Is it worse than high school? Are the tests more difficult than those in high school?

Could you guys tell me about your experience?

And shall I take as many classes as I can during first year or not?

Lol never do that. I made this mistake during my 1st year in uni. Unless you're a prodigy, you won't be able to handle it. It's better to go on a slower pace and get good grades rather than failing half of your courses.

Idk about everywhere else but Uni feels like having to do my year 12 final exams (or uni entry exams if that's what you call it elsewhere) all over again, 8 times a year (8 units in 2 semesters), and unlike high school where failing exams don't mean much, you'd need to repeat the course all over again - on top of all the much harder assignments you get.

There's a lot more workload but then again there's a lot more freedom and flexibility. I can choose my timetable, my classes are short and straightforward and I can miss classes without having the office calling up my parents, sending home a letter and bugging me over an explanation LOL. The lecturers/tutors at Uni where i am don't care about you, honestly. Can be good or bad for some.

Unlike high school where there are strong friendship groups built over years and where everyone is close knit, you're a lot more independent and solo in Uni unless you're outgoing and willing to make friends since you'll be changing so many classes in short amounts of time in such a large curriculum

For me having only needing to go for 2 days a week outweighs all the cons, so, LOL

I've passed all my units so far doing assignments last minute without studying for my exams. If you're more prepared and pay attention to lectures it'd definitely be much easier. Uni is definitely harder than high school but it's doable. Just think of the transition you had from primary to hs, it's similar LOL, you'll get used to it.

Expect long nights.... I used to find it really hilarious when college students tell me to enjoy my high school life while I still could because I couldn't wait for college, but now I feel like going back annd just stay there.

Just don't swerve the wrong path and you'll be fine, but don't underestimate college

Idk if my uni experience will help since we are in different unis in different countries LOL

My first semester is ending (one more paper to goooooooooooo), and I must say that, workload will depend on the modules that you take, for me, there were a lot of readings (but i don't like to read them thus i don't read some of them), a lot of projects~ Some teachers won't spoonfeed you with tips/notes/etc so you must really pay close attention to lectures/tutorials. Lectures may be a bore if you don't get the right lecturers, and I have friends skipping almost all lectures :P

There were camps before uni life officially started to allow us to make friends (but i think that didn't work quite well for me...), and many co-curricular activities (CCA). Join the activity that you like to make more friends :P

(I wanted to join this weekly CCA but didn't pass the audition so I couldn't get in. I joined another bi-weekly CCA instead, and tbh, i was pretty glad that I did not pass that weekly thing as that would mean more time for myself :P)

I was pretty slack throughout sem 1 and I kind of regretted it since y'know, grades will be affected. I just hope that I will do decent for the exams this time...

But still, good luck! :D

Congrats!!

As s.o above has said, I agree uni feels like doing your entrance exam, except you'll be doing it at least a dozen times a sem [emoji846]

I don't think uni there's gonna be like how it is here *I'm vietnamese too, still living in vn* so I can't help you much. It'll get harder with each passing year for sure, but don't pressure yourself about it much, try to enjoy and make the most of it as it comes.

And take it easy on your first year [emoji28] give it time, you can speed up once you're used to how things are in uni.

  • 2 weeks later...

The tests are undoubtedly more difficult compared to high schools. In my country, the common question or dilemma among us students are the place to eat  :rlytearpls:  It's just because you can get bored of eating around the same places every time for like what, 3-4 years?

Other than that, be very careful of the friends you make or those around you. Of course you will find good friends there but some will just talk behind your back or drag you down. People like me do have few good friends but I don't mind living alone either, its something we need to get used to as time goes by

Good Luck!
