Her secretory carcinoma diagnosis accounts for only 0.15% of breast cancers and is "very treatable"

An 8-year-old girl in Centerville, Utah, has been diagnosed with secretory carcinoma, a rare type of breast cancer, making her one of the youngest ever to receive a breast cancer diagnosis.

Chrissy Turner found a lump in her chest last month, The Guardian reports. The news came as a shock not only due to her age, but also the fact that both her parents are cancer survivors. Annette Turner suffered from cervical cancer while her husband currently battles a Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma relapse.

Chrissy’s secretory carcinoma diagnosis accounts for only 0.15% of breast cancers and is “very treatable,†Chrissy Turner’s doctor Brian Bucher told the paper.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with medical expenses. She will undergo a mastectomy in early December.

“I was scared to figure out what it was,†she told ABC TV in an interview. “But I knew I could fight it off and I hope that I can fight it off.â€

If it's treatable, why does she need to undergo a mastectomy? Seems like quite a big surgery for a child... Well I'm not a doctor nor do I know her medical history so let's just hope she gets better.

How was it a shock due to the fact that her parents are cancer survivors?? Like wtf? Shouldn't it be expected then since cancer runs in her family? It's like saying "OMFG YOU GOT CANCER!!??? THAT'S CRAZY! I WOULD HAVE NEVER EXPECTED THAT SPECIALLY SINCE BOTH YOUR PARENTS HAD IT!!"

I'm glad it's a curable form of cancer. It's sad she got it so young but it's good they caught it early.

But I also don't get why she's getting a mastectomy if it's "very treatable"

Idk whoever wrote this article needs to go do some more research. They keep tripping over their own words.

According to breastcancer.ca - "...secretory breast carcinoma is prone to metastasis and local recurrence so must be treated aggressively."

So I suppose in order to avoid it returning they're doing a mastectomy.

The same page I read that on states that "...most breast cancer experts suggest that secretory carcinoma be treated with simple mastectomy and at least low axillary resection."

The type of cancer IS very treatable - but with that method as it produces the best outcome.
