Japanese netizens drag Ayu for breaking some stupid Oricon record

I saw this the other day. Live albums don't do well and few people release them. Namie had one that was included with her dvd and not released on its own. Utada doesn't have one. Koda's are rental only. TVXQ's don't even chart. And as if her fans moved on to Kyary and Kana. Her fans are in their 30s, not teenagers. In the end it's still the highest ranking live album by a female act ever and she is now tied for the most top 10 albums by a female act with Yumi Matsutoya, both having 46.

I do love the comment about how the only non-48, non-JE, non-LDH single in the top 25 is Southern All Stars at #14. The singles chart is shit now supported by gimmicks.

And eww at the netizens wanting her to start shaking hands and including cds with her concert tickets. What they fail to realize is that Ayu is pretty much over the whole fame thing. Has been for years but has accelerated in the past few. It's why she barely promotes now.

Okay, it is a little confusing because why would they drag her if she breaks a record, making it seem like she flopped.

It's a live album. I gave cases in my first post in this thread about how there's no real comparison since nobody else really releases live albums. Nobody expected it to chart that high. All the Ayu fans in the Oricon thread were surprised when the Ninki came out placing it in the top 10. It was unexpected.

Is Ayu hating the new black?

seems to be. I've never seen such fervent e-hatred in jpop circles but it's around her constantly. I don't understand it. I love her but I can understand she's not to everyone's taste, but has she really done anything to garner such hatred? she always came across as so harmless to me.

I kinda agree with the commenter who mentioned they thought Ayu had been somewhat "exploited" (if that's the right term - maybe overexhausted is better) by avex because her prolific amount of releases in a single year seemed overwhelming at times for me. that kind of output is fine for dedicated fans (if they have the money) but it probably loses traction with casual fans pretty quickly since they're unable to keep up with her latest. it's probably better for her to take time releasing really good stuff. that said I love obsessively collecting her stuff so...

Yeah, that I didn't get.

I would say AKB has it worse. At least netizens have had a release of hers or know people who have. They're completely lost as to who the people who buy AKB's stuff is.

I'll take your word for it. I don't know anything about AKB because I'm old and unhip... but I wouldn't be surprised. female artists/groups always get the worst.

I've seen way more AKB bashing than I've ever seen Ayu bashing. And it extends to their fans as well. I've never seen people comment on a certain part of the city smelling horrible and then blaming it on AKB's fans stinking up a stadium nearby. Ayu's popularity is legitimate while AKB's is fueled by bulk buying. Ayu is a singer-songwriter while AKB are just idols.

yeah I've heard about it being a problem in j- and kpop circles but I didn't know it was so serious that it renders some groups basically expendable. I feel bad for the idols. Ayu can handle a bit of backlash at least, she's been around long enough to brush it off easily.

Ayu's had over a decade in the spotlight so she's not really at the public's mercy like these groups are. One of the AKB girls shaved her head because she was caught on a date. Ayu suddenly marries a man, divorces him a year later, gets with one of her backup dancers a few months later, drops him a few months later, and doesn't care. Two totally different systems.

oh yeah, I remember hearing about that. really harrowing stuff. it's definitely a two sides of the coin kind of thing. I wish idols had even a modicum of Ayu's freedom but established artists can take a lot more risks than flash in the pan idols can...
