I don't think SM ever cared about making f(x) super popular otherwise they would've pushed them a lot more in their earlier years and now. They're more like a bunch of individuals coming together once a year to release album and go back to doing their own things. It works for them. SNSD was more for the masses and f(x) was catch the niche fans so that SM would have thr best of both worlds. I think it's too early to tell for Red Velvet but they doing really well and as long SM doesn't drop the ball on group promos I can see them going very far.
