Controversy about Ryu Seung Ryong statement about Suzy

Recommended Posts

Another controversy has burgeoned recently, involving miss A's Suzy and some innocent words that were uttered by her 'Dorihwaga' co-star Ryu Seung Ryong at the film showcase that was held back on November 4.

There seems to be no real harm behind the words the actor said about Suzy; in fact, he was complimenting Suzy on her bright and cheery persona. However, what he said rubbed some people the wrong way. Ryu Seung Ryong had said, "The atmosphere on set was noticeably different when Suzy was there compared to when she wasn't. Just by being there, she infected us with her happiness, aegyo, and the virtue that a female actress should carry on the set. On Pepero Day, she gifted all the staff members, all 100-something of them, with Pepero and handwritten notes." At the time, what the actor said was simply taken as a joke and people hadn't thought too much of it.

However, what Ryu Seung Ryong had just said in the moment became a controversy, as some people claimed the actor's statement was degrading women. The issue may have died down on its own but Go Kyung Pyo added fuel to the fire with the rantings he left on social media.

Go Kyung Pyo wrote on his social media account on November 19, "What kind of nonsense is this. Will someone explain this situation to me? While I was filming for 'The Treacherous,' I went to visit the set [of 'Dorihwaga'] just to say hello and Suzy was just so pretty and nice and I felt that everyone there liked her. Just how do you have to interpret what Ryu Seung Ryong said for you to leave comments like that? How is life in society possible for people like you? Someone please enlighten me. It seems like it's mostly women who are commenting but do women understand what's going on? That reaction? Do you really feel that Suzy is a well of happiness? Did what Ryu Seung Ryong say really make him seem like a pervert?

Go Kyung Pyo was said to have went back and forth with the people on his social media, arguing with them over the issue. Though his social media account is his own space, his extreme words are certainly not helping the case. Netizens who read Go Kyung Pyo's social media post pointed out, "Go Kyung Pyo is the bigger problem here. He is making the issue worse."

Go Kyung Pyo's agency has stepped forward on November 20 to make a statement regarding this matter, telling Daily Sports, "We are discussing the issue with [Go Kyung Pyo]. We are sorting [the matter] out internally.

I´m sure Ryu Seung Ryong had good intentions but that part is problematic: "And the virtue that a female actress should carry on the set"

That part seems to set a standard for female actresses. Their responsibility should be to remain cheerful and bright on set when men are expected to be nothing more than polite and respectful or professional. What Suzy did was sweet but it is not her "duty" to do so. If she remains professional on set just like men, that should be enough without having people to consider it as "odd".

Go Kyung Pyo needs to get off social media. I dont know what his company is doing. He talks too much and likes to argue. He fought with his own fans over Blacknut song too. I understand because my personality is same as his, but as a public figure, it can hurt his image very badly. And he´s getting really popular lately...dont mess everything up please.

"happiness, aegyo, and the virtue that a female actress should carry on the set"

Alright then, you heard the man, all smiles, lots of cheerfulness and lots of baby cosplaying to make us feel all big up!

And that Pyo fellow should really take a step back and assess the fact that the problem in contention here is a problem of partriarchy and sexism. Whilst perversion is part of those concepts let's address the more relevant issue at hand: entitlement over a woman's behaviour and mannerism in favour of a man's comfort and liking.

Edit: *scrolls down* To whom it applies: I don't think there is a need for Suzy fans to belittle something like this no matter the scale because they might feel like it will take away from the parts of speech that praise her. No one is negating her praises by pointing these things out. Not to mention I think most people are capable of comprehending several things at once and reacting seperately to each one as they feel fit and according to their own ideals and notions.

i see no controversy here and i agree with  the co-actor  but lol!!!! kyung po is always putting his mouth in cases where he could easily avoid. he is  slowly becoming like a controversy magnet. and most of the time he is not even at fault in any way and is usually just a spectator..

his company should just take over his social media or something..there are some people that social media does more harm to them than good.

wasnt he the same guy who commented on social media during the song mino smtm scandal when he was supporting blacknut( dont really know much about the issue but i know his name came up and ...and he got dragged by knets for posting that he liked blacknut's song and that "a song is just a song" knowing fully well knetz were outraged by the lyrics at the moment..) lol. .. and got himself into the mess of the whole thing. why does he always comment...poor boy. i know that is his views and he is allowed to have them and a lot of the times he is usually right but he will soon come to understand that people/knets are usually very sensitive when a controversy newly comes out so if another celebrity up and starts speaking their views about the topic in heat some netz will agree while some will drag them.

I understand why some people could get it the wrong way. It's like saying actresses are there to brighten the atmosphere while the DUDES are doing the hard job! not really sensitive but not dramatic either!

but that other dude didn't have to open his mouth

Yes. He was only praising Suzy. It just didnt come out as intended. I understand the concern this time and its also true Go Kyung Pyo made it worse...

go kyung po is always making things worse uninvited.. like he did with the song mino and blacknut lyric controversy.

sometimes i feel like hitting him on the head. his company needs to take control of his social media.lol

and whats worse is he always leaves unscathed while the people he always tries to defend get hurt more in the process of "his defending"

Your reaching for straws her my friend. Suzy happens to be a kind individual so he praised her for that. he never expected anything else. praising a kind heart invididual who gifted people with pepero and gifts are not viewed bad by both men and women thats the equal judgement of the brain. giving a high praise for it is the only right thing to do

I dont think he meant it in a sexist way but his words can easily be misinterpreted so I understand the controversy in a way but people shouldnt jump him so quickly they should give him a chance to explain himself before labeling him or his intention

Agree. I like him because he´s not afraid to speak his mind. He´s really bold but this can be toxic for his career. Especially when he fails to properly analyze the situation. His company should ban him from SNS. lol

Agree. These issues need to be adressed more. So if a female is tired from long hours of filming for example, stay on her own and doesnt manage to cheer people up on set...would they side-eye her because she´s not "fulfilling her duty?" It kinda sheds light on how women are viewed as in society: Vitamin ball/ aegyo machine. I´m sure Ryu Seung Ryong probably didnt mean it that way but unfortunately it came out that way. This strangely reminds of Kara Jiyoung being exiled from the industry for refusing to do aegyo on Radio Star...they probably thought its common sense for women to cheer people up and the entitlement went that far...
