Jisan Rock Fest Can do More to Survive in Music Fest Competition

Jisan Forest Resort may be a great place to hold a big-scale music event but location is not all that makes a musical festival great.

“2013 Jisan World Rock Festival†(“Jisan Rockâ€) drew in some 88,000 audiences to its three-day festivities of music getaway with world-class headliners Weezer, Nas, PLACEBO, Jamiroquai and local rock talents at the Jisan Forest Resort in the city of Incheon from August 2 to 4.

The inaugural year of the event, since separating from CJ E&M’s “Valley Rock Festival†that found its new home at the seaside city of Ansan (“Ansan Rockâ€), attracted a wide range of audiences from babies on family trips to first-time visiting middle-aged couples.

However, it was mostly over-issued invitation tickets that brought the newcomers and holiday travelers to “Jisan Rock†after losing die-hard rock manias partly to “Ansan Rock†held successfully a week before and the rest to the “Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival†held the same weekend.

Friday, its opening day that saw hard rain plummeting down in the evening, was disappointing for audiences who mostly came a long way to see Nas, the hip-hop big name who marked his first visit to Korea during his 19-years music career.

Korean rock manias became outraged when due to the heavy rain, Nas ended up performing at the same time as U.S. rock band Weezer when both were headliners for the first day of the festival. Although the two performed on different stages, the audience was forced to pick from one of the two much-anticipated shows without proper guidance on site.

Disappointed fans rushed to Twitter and web communities to pour out their anger and disappointment regarding the poor management of “Jisan Rock.â€

The following two days proceeded smoothly but it seemed that the festival has some work to do to regain the favorable reputation it previously had.

The main stage World Stage, two-thirds the size of last year’s main Big Top Stage, smothered the sounds that came from bass guitars as well as creating droning-like sounds for all other distinctive instruments.

Urban Zakapa, a skilled pop R&B trio that touched the third afternoon sweetly, was one of a few artists that benefited from voice-focused sound system.

Even pop jazz veterans Jamiroquai, the very last performer on the World Stage, couldn’t overcome the disappointing sound although frontman Jay Kay put his heart and soul into a 90-minute show that made the biggest number of audiences dance.

Over on the Peace Stage, the mid-sized and atmospheric venue succeeded at creating the setting for some of the most impressive stages for Korean indie bands, unlike its previous years in a big and humid dome.

Eleven-piece ska band Kingston Rudieska, a frequent performer in Korean music festivals, hosted an hour’s ska party, joining the active audience in enjoying the full-brass band’s sound to the fullest with a circle dance party and train game in the mud.

The joint stage of the top Korean ska band and two other ska bands Dr. Ring Ding Ska-vaganza from Germany and Doberman from Japan proved that ska is the right tune if someone is looking for just having fun.

Deli Spice also fully utilized the venue to connect with their dedicated fans, who supported the iconic modern rock band’s 16-year career, revitalized after their comeback performance at the very same venue two years ago.

“Confession†and “Chow Chow,†their two much-played top songs even a decade after their releases, hit the peak of the welcoming performance with an overwhelming number of people singing along.

Ska punk band Lazybone, reunited after an 8-year hiatus due to disharmony among members, made old rock fans chock up upon seeing the five of them rock and rolling together again after all those years.

Modern rock band Broccoli, You Too also showed their own way of rocking with their elaborately crafted songs, which Korean youths, who are struggling like narrators in their serene yet powerful music, have sympathized with.

The four-member band’s followers sang along to all the tunes and reacted enthusiastically to their neighbor-next-door-like band, which gave leader Deokwon the impression that “tonight will be the one night I’ll never forget.â€

Still, the camera work for the screens at the festival that wandered from the vocalist’s face to the guitar and the bass, was too plain for the great performances, while the pop-art exhibition that the festival had so proudly promoted but turned out to be a let-down, took away precious resting space from the audience who could have found shelter from the beating sun and sudden rain showers.

Here is to hoping that next year’s “Jisan Rock†will be better equipped to please music fans.

Let me introduce to you new rock band AFA, that recently released first EP 'Rise Above'. Here you can listen samples of all 5 songs off the album. And probably you'll hear familiar voice - that's right. The vocals of the band belongs to Park Geun Hong (ë°•ê·¼í™) of Gate Flowers
