Is the K-Pop Industry not as Progressive as we thought?

People allude to the lack of equal treatment between genders in the k-pop industry all the time, but most never seriously address the issue.

Why is it that iKon's Bobby, SR15B's Taeyong & even EXO's Chanyeol are all able to bury their bullying scandal within weeks, yet when it comes to a girl group member's bullying scandal or even iljin scandal, it follows them around almost indefinitely. This also applies on a larger scale when we take into account drug scandals (GD vs Park Bom).

What are your thoughts?

' & even EXO's Chanyeol are all able to bury their bullying scandal'

??????????????????????????????????//

Also what kind of dumbass would you have to be to think that kpop is progressive? Like for real kpop plus any other entertainment business is never gonna aim to be progressive, they aim to make money, if suddenly they start taking an interest in minorities it's because they realize there is money to be made there, not because they care about fairness/equality and so on, just like in Hollywood. Though it is possible to be progressive within these industries, the industries themselves are certainly not progressive.

maybe it's just u who thought kpop is progressive.

This has more to do with SK in general rather than kpop only- kpop is merely an extension (or bette yet reflection) of the misogyny in SK.

Also I hope you're not brining this topic up just because of IU's scandal

Kpop isnt really progressive thought It never was, it is "pop" after all its suppose to appeal to the masses so It will always follow the trends for the music styles

As for bullying "scandals" its more to do with company power and fandoms then actual gender.  The thing about Bom is her scandal has not got her banished 2ne1 is going to comeback eventually and if the song is good she wont effect the success of the group because of her scandal and for GD he only overcame his scandal thanks to music and vips and he still gets massive hate for being a "druggie".  It seems this whole double standard debate happens every week but somehow the facts are always left in the mist in order to prove a biased point of view

IU has gone through about 2455 scandals and is still around because she makes music that the public eats up as for most other females idols in the industry their styles are much more expendable and replaceable the same goes for boy groups but the difference is boy groups from larger companies have giant loyal fanbases that are ride or die, most girl groups dont have this and if groups like SNSD or Fx were to go through scandals their giant fanbases will back them the same way most boy groups get that treatment but if a group like Teen Top, Bestie or Topp Dogg were to get into scandal they would be done because they dont have a large fandom its not all about gender

If I'm not mistaken, Chanyeol was caught talking bout how ugly SNSD was without makeup on an online forum.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

certain regular users of the bashing thread are not gonna take kindly to the revelation that they are bullies.  :hurr:  :har:

Do we even know the contractual obligations and benefits given between employees to remotely ascertain how much equality there is from a business standpoint for kpop?

Like, I'm fairly sure the most anyone can tell you is that korean actors get paid more than korean pop stars and are generally more respected.

Nobody's talked about the obligations or contract disparities between genders.

Though there's clear xenophobia to a certain extent that has been revealed.

Most we know is that the industry is shit to their artists

We just don't know if it's more shit to one gender than another(not counting societal norms which are more of an outside factor)

what? people still talk about taeyong's and assuming you meant b.i. being bullies in addition to b.i's dad embezzlement thing and taeyong scamming.

"This also applies on a larger scale when we take into account drug scandals (GD vs Park Bom)"

and gd's drug scandal still follows him as well.

I don't want to start a fan-war. I just think this is just an important discussion to have, with or without the involvement of EXO the sentiment stated earlier holds true.

I think this is a bit misguided, there are hundreds of big bang articles  that have been created over the past couple of months and virtually none of the top comments were related to GD's drug scandal, however nearly all of 2NE1's articles involve Park Bom's drug scandal.

I thought by your title you meant the music being progressive.

It's not the music industry but society in general expect women to be gentle, kind, tolerable, compassionate and not act like thugs so when it does happens, it's seen as unacceptable and not tolerated.

For men, it's not something unusual or surprising for them to be aggressive, bullies, or thugs (for lack of a better word) ...it's the macho mentality...so of course if it happens in KPOP or anywhere else, it's not that it's acceptable but it's overall less shocking than if females do it.

well bom's scandal is more fresh compared's to gd's which happened like 4 years ago plus if you read old netizenbuzz articles most comments even the top ones would call him a druggie and or say he needs to reflect and apologize. not that i'm denying double standards that go on in kpop or anything.
