What continent is Australia part of?

I am Australian, and I've asked all 5 geography teachers i've had over the past 12 years of school what continent Australia is part of and been told Oceania, australasia, or that Australia itself is a continent along with a bunch of other, random suggestions from classmates.

Given the uncertainty and inconsistency of answers i still have no concrete answer, although i'd place my best bet on australasia.

and as not knowing is kind of pathetic given I live here, so does anyone have a definite answer?

I've always been taught that Australia is NOT a continent but actually a country (hence why it can enter sporting events on its own, has its own currency, own flag etc). Ive been taught that the "continent" that Australia belongs to is called Oceania (Australia + plus all those surround islands like NZ, Fiji etc).
