A lot of times (especially around the 2009-2010 era) choreo is a factor in helping a hit song become more popular. Gee's dance craze was an important piece of the song's success. Other songs with such iconic choreo are KARA's Mister, BEAST's Fiction, BEG's Abracadabra, SHINee's Ring Ding Dong, etc.

Even if the choreo didn't help make a song super successful, it plays a part in group's overall popularity sometimes. Great choreography is the reason SHINee, INFINITE, and BTS are considered kings of dance in kpop. There are other groups that dance just as well but aren't recognized because their choreos aren't as memorable, innovative, or exciting.

I couldn't even tell you who choreographed Gee. I think choreographers get too little credit.

I wonder how much they get paid.

In the industry you are paid a salary if you are a company choreographer and you get a percetage of money for each time the song is played anywhere.

For example EXO's Growl choreographers got over 1million won in just the money percentage they get from that song being played.

I think they have a lot more respect than you'd assume. If you were a part of the dance community I think you'd be surprised how much celebrity status choreographers have. This is speaking from an American's point of view, but I would presume to Korean dance community would function similarly.

Rino Nakasone, Tony Testa, and even Ian Eastwood are all pretty well known in the Shinee fandom.

SHINee's one of the few groups. All foreign choreographers as well. I noticed SM tends to spill about their foreign choreographers more than the ones from their own company/country.

I think it has something to do with many netizens who didnt take dancing as a talent the same as singing

Many clueless netizen often called hyoyeon, yoong, and yul (non singing line in snsd) as untalented

When they are actually a really great dancers

It's probably also partly because non-kpop fans don't really keep up with actual stages, so most of them don't really appreciate the dances and only listen to the music. Songwriters tend to get more shine. People forget that a lot of kpop is about the performance/presentation too, I guess. But it is baffling how even choreographers of the most iconic of dances don't get enough credit.

I've never seen hyoyeon get called untalented tho

Just that dancing is her only talent, the only reason she got in snsd, etc etc lmao

Beast x Prepix was a nice OTP. Back then Beast had memorable hook dance steps/moves during their choruses. Since they've parted ways, Beast had more difficult choreography and hired foreign choreographers but I guess it is not as memorable as their dance moves in Shock, Soom and Fiction.

And to answer OP, yeah they don't get much credit for the work they do imo.
